As New Hanover County Commissioner, I advocate for our County and its citizens at every available opportunity and to every possible elected figure at the local, state, and federal levels. That's a big part of my job, and I take that responsibility very seriously. To that end, I just returned from conducting such advocacy in Washington, D.C., alongside a bipartisan group of my fellow Commissioners. We spoke to Senator Ted Budd, Senator Thom Tillis, and Representative David Rouzer about some the kitchen table issues our County is facing, including those related to beach nourishment, disaster aid, clean water, preservation of green space (e.g., the western bank of the Cape Fear River), and, yes, funding for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement. Because there has been a lot of discussion and concern locally about the CFMB replacement funding "being paused," I want to specifically report that both Senators Budd and Tillis made clear that they sincerely believed that the previously announced $242 million dollar grant was not in danger of being rescinded. They described the pause as a normal occurrence when administrations change. There is a review process in place, but worthy projects such as the CFMB replacement are not in the proverbial crosshairs. They assured us, along with Rep. Rouzer, that they are fully committed to protecting this source of funding for this critical piece of future infrastructure. And, further to that point, they were receptive when I explained that even further funding should be provided if at all possible. Thank you to our federal representatives for taking the time to meet with me and my colleagues. And thank you for recognizing how important NHC is to both our great state and nation.
