???? Mexican business leaders anticipated that consumers on both sides of the border will have to face price increases if the tariffs set to be imposed by the Trump administration go into effect on Saturday. Isaac Vega álvarez baja, director of Baja's commercial index, told Border Report that cities along the border will be affected the most by the fallout. "It will affect job opportunities and the price of many products will rise," he said. Vega álvarez added that the effect won't be immediate, but they will be felt in the short and long term, "particularly in regions heavily dependent on industry." Regardless, all consumers on both sides of the border will be facing increases in the measures go into effect: "Things will have to be overpriced," he said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been reportedly directed to increase immigration arrests, targeting three cities per week and aiming to detain between 1,200 and 1,500 individuals a day. So far this week, operations have focused arrests in Chicago, in an operation that began Sunday, and New York City, where arrests began Tuesday. The efforts were set to continue Thursday in Aurora, a Colorado city that made headlines during the campaign trail when Donald Trump said the city had been "infected by #Venezuela," but the operation was cancelled after details of the operation made the news. "It seems ICE is concerned with publishing quantity and not quality as they have been detaining people who already have a hearing scheduled in the near future without any criminal history and have not shown that they will not appear for their hearings," said immigration lawyer and professor of Practice at the University of Houston Law Center, Rehan Alimohammad to The Latin Times. ?? ?? Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, widely praised for her groundbreaking role in Emilia Pérez, is now facing intense scrutiny as past controversies resurface, overshadowing her historic Oscar nomination. While previous backlash remained largely within Latino and Spanish-language media, newly unearthed tweets about Islam and Muslims have escalated the scandal, sparking global outrage and raising questions about her public image. The controversy surrounding the film intensified this week when director Jacques Audiard made remarks about the Spanish language that many found offensive. In an interview, Audiard stated, "Spanish is a language of modest countries, of developing countries, of the poor, and of migrants." Gascón has also faced criticism for her response to negative reactions from Mexican and Brazilian audiences regarding Emilia Pérez. ??? Hours after Google announced that it will rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America in the United States, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her administration will send out a letter to the tech giant to question its decision to change the name for users of Google Maps in the U.S. By signing the executive order "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness," President Donald Trump also reverted the name of Denali, North America's tallest peak in Alaska, back to Mount McKinley, a decade after former President Barack Obama changed the mountain's name as a symbolic gesture to Alaskan natives. But despite Sheinbaum's discontent, Google called the decision part of a "long-standing practice": https://lnkd.in/enGEEeMC #Mexico #Sheinbaum #Google

???? A Colombian congressman harshly criticized President Gustavo Petro over his handling of the tariff standoff with U.S. counterpart Donald Trump over the deportation of hundreds of nationals. "Petro's so-called 'battle against the empire' lasted no more than three hours, because, obviously, mistreating Colombia's main trade partner would mean destroying the Colombian economy," Colombian congressman Christian Garcés Aljure told The Latin Times. "That Sunday afternoon and evening were filled with panic for all Colombians, especially in the business sector," he added. "The economic consequences would've been felt by exporters, due to the tariffs imposed by Trump, and by importers, because of the tariffs Petro had promised in response. The economic crisis that would have ensued would have been unprecedented in the country's history." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eQ7AAMAf ??Pedro Camacho #Colombia #Petro #Empire

A coalition of Quaker groups has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over a recent policy shift that allows immigration enforcement in "sensitive" locations, such as schools and places of worship. The lawsuit, filed on January 27 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, challenges the Trump administration's reversal of long-standing protections for such spaces, arguing that the policy violates constitutional rights to religious freedom and freedom of association. The Quaker lawsuit argues that this policy undermines fundamental tenets of their faith, particularly communal worship. In their religious practice, worship is conducted in silence, allowing individuals to share divine messages freely. The presence of immigration enforcement near meetinghouses disrupts this environment and instills fear among immigrant attendees, leading some congregations to cancel worship services entirely. Reached for comment by The Latin Times, immigration attorney Michelle Marty, believes the lawsuit by the Quaker groups to be "both legally significant and symbolically powerful" as it will be based on constitutional and statutory protections under the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which protect the right to practice religion, including all aspects of observance. ??
