In the news- WAMC inteviews Kendal resident Muriel Fox about her book and her approach to activism. They write: “Now 97, Fox is still advocating for women's rights from her retirement community at Kendal on Hudson. Why did you want to write The Women's Revolution? It's so important, I feel more important than ever now, in today's political climate, that people understand you can make a difference. It's not easy. It takes struggle, and you make mistakes. But at the same time, we did change the world. And despite the problems today, the world's never going to go back to the way it was in 1966. When NOW was founded, at that time the newspaper ads said, "Help wanted: male," and "Help wanted: female." Women were only four percent of America's lawyers, only seven percent of America's doctors, and only one percent of America's judges. It was just considered routine that a woman really lived only to raise a family and to support her husband and children, and that this would give hergreat satisfaction. And then Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique, and proved to women all over the world — 50 million bought her book — that you can have another life, also. It's all part of life to accomplish, to realize what you want to do, what you can do, and to be a partner with men. We weren't opponents, never were opponents with men. But we've always been partners, and equal partnership has worked” FYI: Muriel's episode is also available as a podcast on NPR! Together, transforming the experience of aging.?
关于我们
As a system of not-for-profit communities, programs and services founded on Quaker values, Kendal aspires to transform the experience of aging, guided by Kendal’s Values and Practices (see www.kendal.org ). They help ensure that Kendal’s residents and staff share the spirit of community and collaboration and the respect for each individual that flow from Quaker principles. Kendal affiliates work together within the Kendal System and with caring people outside of it to transform our culture’s view of aging and of older persons, stressing the potential for fulfillment and continuing contribution during the later stages of life. The Kendal System uses a federal-type model that seeks to obtain the best of two worlds: sensitivity to local circumstances with most decision-making at a local level, and a capacity to gain benefits of being part of a larger system. Oversight of each Kendal organization is provided by a local board of directors. Residents and community members serve together on each of those boards and the President of each resident association attends those respective board meetings. Said another way, governance of each Kendal organization is not in some corporate office removed from the people being served. Residents are informed about financial and other matters in which they have important interest. Assets are kept within local Kendal organizations throughout the Kendal System and not put at risk to fund new developments in other places. That model has been built and refined over time, with the participation and care of the leadership of all of the organizations in the Kendal System.
