As a system of not-for-profit communities, programs and services founded on Quaker values, Kendal aspires to transform the experience of aging, guided by Kendal’s Values and Practices (see www.kendal.org ). They help ensure that Kendal’s residents and staff share the spirit of community and collaboration and the respect for each individual that flow from Quaker principles. Kendal affiliates work together within the Kendal System and with caring people outside of it to transform our culture’s view of aging and of older persons, stressing the potential for fulfillment and continuing contribution during the later stages of life. The Kendal System uses a federal-type model that seeks to obtain the best of two worlds: sensitivity to local circumstances with most decision-making at a local level, and a capacity to gain benefits of being part of a larger system. Oversight of each Kendal organization is provided by a local board of directors. Residents and community members serve together on each of those boards and the President of each resident association attends those respective board meetings. Said another way, governance of each Kendal organization is not in some corporate office removed from the people being served. Residents are informed about financial and other matters in which they have important interest. Assets are kept within local Kendal organizations throughout the Kendal System and not put at risk to fund new developments in other places. That model has been built and refined over time, with the participation and care of the leadership of all of the organizations in the Kendal System. Meet Barbara and Dan- two of the first featured board members of Kendal Charitable Funds.
Kendal Charitable Funds is led by a diverse group of individuals dedicated to transforming the lives of older adults at Kendal and beyond. Kendal Charitable Funds board members share a deep commitment to service and bring unique skill sets to the table that help the organization?carry?out its mission. In this board member spotlight post, learn about Barbara and Dan. Barbara Freedman, Board Chair of Kendal Charitable Funds and resident at Kendal at Hanover, is a lifelong community leader and seasoned professional. She is currently serving her first term as Board Chair, having been appointed in January 2024. Dan Churchill, CPA, Executive Vice President of LeadingAge Illinois, is a new member of the Kendal Charitable Fund board. He started his career as an auditor at a public accounting firm where his clients included multiple senior living communities. As an auditor, Dan enjoyed his time on-site with the older adult residents at his clients’ communities.

During my last visit to Enso Village, I had an opportunity to meet Chef Patrick. He is the new baker for the community and brings a strong passion for breads and pastries. He has big plans to expand the program under Kyle Evans, CDM, CFPP leadership. I am excited to see how they work together to bring a variety of baked goods to community. A recent Multi-Housing News interview with Vassar Byrd provides insights into Kendal’s federal model and her unique perceptions of the future of senior living and services. Some insights Vassar shares in the article: "In the federal model, TKC and the affiliates share costs across the system. We can share the cost of software, licenses, research, as well as human expertise. Smaller organizations often cannot afford to retain the very best HR or financial personnel and systems, as an example. A single-site community can have excellent people working onsite, but the additional layer of Kendal system resources and expertise ensures that the best possible decisions are being made with the organization because there is a larger team working together." "My hopes for the field of senior living are that we are disrupted in positive ways and always looking for solutions for the individual members we support and serve. We need to be looking for solutions regarding how older adults live their lives when they are done with their primary work lives. My hope is that they can do different, innovative things with the support of organizations like TKC."
