Eventually, serial swatter Alan Filion’s IP address was leaked—and this lead to him getting caught. If you’re working on law enforcement—or you’re trying to get justice for a crime that you’ve experienced—this might make the process that much more difficult. Luckily, if there is enough evidence that someone has harassed, doxxed or swatted you, it is possible to catch them—it just takes persistence and hard work. Should you get your local law enforcement involved if you think you might get SWAT-ted? If you live in Los Angeles or Washington DC, you can be rest assured that the police are familiar with SWATting attacks—but if you live somewhere smaller, with fewer celebrities and high profile figures, you might run into trouble explaining yourself and your concerns to law enforcement. We also recommend that you’re pro-active about your own safety: take down your personal information from the Internet, and be vigilant about your own personal privacy so that people can’t call in threats to your apartment in the first place. Did you know that you can set up 2FA with your local police to avoid SWAT attacks? Do you think you might be at risk of SWATting? If so, it’s a good idea to get in touch with your local law enforcement—while some law enforcement officers are more familiar with SWATting as a digital threat than others, you can give your local police department your phone number to text as a sort of “2 factor authentication” to know if there truly is a serious threat going on at your home. It’s a good way to make them both aware of SWATing, and to ensure that they don’t waste resources on something that is ultimately a fake call. Got questions about SWATting or digital threats? What if I told you that LinkedIn was the most dangerous social media platform? Have you heard of this scam? Scammers get on LinkedIn and target new recruits, pretending to be their bosses and coworkers—caught up in all of the vulnerabilities of being a new hire, the scam victims often fall for it hook, line and sinker. It doesn’t matter that the scam is largely automated; most people have enough information on their LinkedIn profiles that the automation systems are able to create a very convincing impersonation. Want to stay safe? Here’s our pro tips: Don’t immediately share when you just get hired somewhere—it’s exciting to share the good news, but this is exactly how you can get targeted. Wait to build up some trust with your new employer, instead. Ask for a work phone, so that you can make sure to keep work communications and personal communications separate. Never share your work phone number, so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. If you’re making videos for your work, ask your work to invest in something like Kanary for your protection—putting yourself out there helps your company, so it’s only fair that they have your back when it comes to protecting your data, and making sure you can’t be targeted through scams and digital harassment, as well.
