Sixteen attorneys general, co-led by Massachusetts AG Andrea Joy Campbell, have issued guidance to private sector employers that "efforts to seek and support diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible workplaces are not illegal, and the federal government cannot prohibit these efforts in the private sector through Executive Order." They write that the "President's Order is an attempt to bully employers into eliminating lawful policies that we know reduce complaints of illegal discrimination, increase a company's bottom line, and improve workforce culture and consumer experience." To put this in context: The purpose of DEI programs has always been to solve for longstanding and deeply entrenched hiring and business practices that discriminate against women and people of color. Anti-DEI orders or policies seek to re-segregate companies by returning to the past, to a myth of color-blindness and meritocracy that was built on lawful segregation and the lie that Black or Brown people or women in general were not as talented or qualified as white men by dint of their biology or culture. Even Trump admits this by way of projecting his plans onto civil rights advocates that they are the discriminators when he signed an illegal Executive Order to outlaw a civil rights era anti-discrimination law. “We abolished 60 years of prejudice and hatred [since 1965] with the signing of one order, all approved by the United States Supreme Court," he said in Las Vegas on Jan 25. "We are allowed to do it because we are now in a merit-based world.” Take a minute to digest this: Trump said there has been prejudice and hatred in employment since Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil and Votings Rights Act of 1964-1965. In the lie Trump tells, it is white people who have been discriminated against since the 1960s, which he has now remedied by outlawing anti-discrimination law and policies such as DEI. It is that simple, an inversion of the truth. What Trump is saying is a projection to people who either don't care about facts or who are not well informed or both. Moreover, a political movement that is threatened by, or seeks to eliminate, celebrating Black history month or Hispanic heritage or Women's history is a political movement that is on the wrong side of history, which is precisely why so much history is being banned and outlawed in schools. The call for color-blindness and merit is a dog whistle for a return to an America where some white people do not have to compete because the rules are rigged in their favor, just as has been the case for hundreds of years in the country. Please read the press release and circulate at work and in your networks. If you want to do something, this is an opportunity to help people know what is at stake with complying in advance.

Wanna practice a little malicious compliance? Well, let's talk about our favorite (not so) little workplace well-being blueprint that the Surgeon General developed that centers workers' voices. The bonus, it works like a playbook on how to do the work without setting off any of the buzzword alarms that have our current administration shaking in their boots. Our leadership learning cohorts at CDSS' REIB initiative are proof that this framework WORKS in even the most politically diverse groups. We've gotten to work with leaders across California who are ready to ground in radical and empathetic leadership to level up their team dynamics and help them achieve the meaningful impact they all envision. Over these next few weeks, we're breaking down the Surgeon General's 5 essentials to workplace well-being, and you don't want to miss this! Share this with that leader in your network who needs to hear this TODAY. Let's build something real together! #WorkplaceCulture #LeadershipDevelopment #WorkplaceWellness #ProfessionalDevelopment #CorporateCulture #Leadership

This isn't just a month of remembrance – it's a continued call to action for the work that remains ahead.? ? Reminder: the intention is to overwhelm; don't be afraid to take a beat until there is further information. There are groups that are constantly working and ready to mobilize for this kind of moment. We encourage you to get plugged into them and follow them for your news while we are threatened with aggressive executive orders.
President and CEO, National Council of Nonprofits Former President and CEO, National Low Income Housing Coalition (2016-2025)
??The White House has *rescinded the memo* that would have halted all federal grants and loans?? Nonprofits throughout the country - and the people they serve - can breathe a sigh of relief now that the White House has backed off its reckless and harmful plan to halt funding for critical programs from homeless/housing assistance, to disaster relief and rebuilding, to rape crisis centers and suicide hotlines. Keep doing your extraordinary, important work throughout the country, and we’ll stay vigilant and ready to act.
