Stellar lineup! ?? CHRISTIAN MICHEL Session: Policy & Aerospace Dr. Christian Michel is a distinguished scientist whose career spans over five decades, marked by groundbreaking contributions in the fields of magnetic materials, semiconductors, photovoltaic materials, catalysts, and nanotechnology. With a dual Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Missouri and Physics from Grenoble University, Dr. Michel has worked alongside Nobel laureates and has been at the forefront of scientific innovation. From 2015 to 2018, as a Senior Scientist at Nanotheranostics (NTI) in New York, Dr. Michel developed cutting-edge nanomagnets with magnetic properties that rivaled the best existing magnets doped with rare earth elements. His pioneering work also led to the development of the first nanoparticle-based contrast agent for early cancer detection via MRI. Further applications are underway with NTI and in collaboration with the 2023 Chemistry Nobel Prize winner Alexei Ekimov who worked on the team. Prior to his tenure at NTI, Dr. Michel served as an Energy Consultant from 2010 to 2015, providing his expertise to Shell Oil in Houston, Texas, and IFP/Axens in Paris, France. His consultancy roles were preceded by a 20-year career at Royal Dutch Shell, where he led a group that developed new catalysts with enhanced performance for oil reforming applications. Dr. Michel’s earlier achievements include his role as Program Leader at Cytec in Stamford, Connecticut, from 1975 to 1990. There, he developed highly efficient gallium arsenide (GaAs) based photovoltaic cells using an innovative vapor deposition process. These cells were integral to the Strategic Defense Initiative project and were later selected by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for a Mars mission, powering a rover that successfully landed on the Red Planet in 1997. His initial foray into the scientific community was at Philips Research Laboratories in Briarcliff Manor, New York, from 1970 to 1975, where he developed and characterized semiconductor materials for optoelectronic applications. This was after his stint as a Visiting Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratories from 1967 to 1970, where he conducted advanced research in magnetic materials sponsored by the US Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Michel’s illustrious career is also highlighted by his academic lineage, having worked under Professor Louis Neel, the 1970 Physics Nobel Prize recipient. His prolific contributions to science are documented in his 24 patents and 48 publications, marking him as a leader and innovator in his field. Dr. Michel’s work not only reflects his profound knowledge and expertise but also his commitment to advancing technology for the betterment of society. Christian MICHEL
