In this interview Matt Damon talks about loses in filmmaking, resulting from streaming and the disappearance of DVD and Home Video. His simple math suggests a $25M movie will cost another $25M in Print and Advertising. This led me to wonder: When will the P & A business change for the benefit of the filmmakers and films? It seems like a very lopsided equation, knowing that P & A, which is more focused and calculated, has as much of a failure rate and zero guarantee as a film. I don't immediately know the answer, but I have theories. I feel the first agency to crack this code will do quite well in the art of reverse engineering a film, then maybe someone will know something about filmmaking, but until then as Goldman stated “not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what’s going to work”? https://lnkd.in/gRR5zbft

Today I was reminded by friend and producer Kipp Christiansen of the fun spot I shot and directed for the Chicago Blackhawks, well over 10 years ago. My, my how time flies:

Check your LOGLINE in Chat GPT (for Screenwriters): Just for grins, I thought I'd check the sentence structure of a logline for one of my screenplays using Chat GPT, for it seems, from what I have learned, the logline is the holy grail for entry over the formidable wall of filmmaking. Never mind that a logline often feels like a stream of conscience run on sentence with perfectly placed character, plot and story in as few words as possible, designed to represent a 100 page document painstakingly crafted over months and years. The deities forbid one overused, misused, misplaced word or punctuation, the bar for entry is high and on fire. A simple semantical gaffe could send your UNREAD work off the Starboard Bow. (All that gibberish stated it should be noted I don't us Chat GPT, in fact I tested it once prior and I was creeped out by plagiaristic 'ick' of it all) All that aside, please come along this journey with me for a second, it's actually pretty freakin scary, creepy and cool. So my plan was to just check sentence structure and proper use of words, but since I'm a luddite in the world of AI, I just dropped my logline in before asking for help with sentence structure. From that simple input, Chat GPT, offered a full film/story analysis. I watched the cursor rip across several lines, creating a would be film idea before my eyes, then my stomach dropped and my head grew light... Is Chat GPT going to read me back my film? I swallowed, stared into the wall for a few seconds, FFFFFuuuudge... then I read it. Phew, I am happy to say that Chat GPT does not know my screenplay. But what I did learn and this was cool, is that it created an interpretation of my painstakingly well crafted logline that may be had by another... say an agent, manager or producer... Jury is still out if I do this again, but if nothing else, it told me, that perhaps my logline doesn't suck and perhaps, just perhaps I have learned something, as always TBD. BTW: The sentence structure did pass Chat GPT muster, meaning the words work, they were all mine and were not edited thereupon.

We' have gotten quite a few accolades for our writing on Chang, Chang, Chaaang. Most of which we have no idea what to do with. Getting read, considered and produced is the end game. Inspired by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, however this TV -Pilot is based on a true story.
