The GFF for Women, Children & Adolescents helps countries transform how they #InvestInHealth + nutrition.

关于我们

Investing in women, children and adolescents is one of the most impactful actions a country can make. It improves population health, empowers women to be agents of change in their communities, and puts countries on a path towards development and prosperity. The Global Financing Facility (GFF) is a country-led partnership, hosted at the World Bank, that fights poverty and inequity by advancing the health and rights of women, children and adolescents. It does this by supporting countries to strengthen health systems and improve access to care through prioritized plans, aligned public and private financing, and policy reform.

?? In case you missed it!???? ?? Earlier this month, CIVIC together with the Ban Ki-moon Foundation and The Global Financing Facility (GFF), co-hosted a powerful discussion in New York alongside the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (#CSW69). ??Our event, "Catalyzing Change: Scaling Civil Society-led Solutions for Global Challenges" brought together global leaders to explore the critical role of grassroots and civil society organizations in advancing health, gender equity, and climate resilience. ?? The event opened with special virtual remarks from H.E. Ban Ki Moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, highlighting the urgency of inclusive, locally led initiatives in driving sustainable development. Perspectives from grassroots changemakers reinforced the importance of strategic partnerships, capacity-building, and policy support to amplify the impact of civil society organizations) worldwide. ??Followed by a panel where speakers explored the power of grassroots leadership in shaping solutions to global challenges. From health equity to climate resilience, gender justice to youth empowerment, the conversation made it clear: local organizations must have the resources and influence to lead change. ?? A key takeaway from the discussion was the urgent need to shift from short-term, project-based support to long-term, flexible funding that enables grassroots organizations to thrive. Participants emphasized that sustainable impact requires investments that prioritize locally led solutions, ensuring that CSOs have the autonomy and resources to drive meaningful change in their communities. Speakers also highlighted the power of knowledge-sharing and peer networks in strengthening civil society’s capacity, advocating for more inclusive spaces where local voices can shape policies and funding priorities. By fostering these connections and innovative partnerships, we can accelerate progress toward global health, gender equity, and climate resilience. ?? • Friday, March 28 | No. 8 in the GFF/WHO #HealthFinancing & PHC Webinar Series Although Primary Health Care (PHC) has been recognized as essential for the success of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the resources allocated are insufficient and difficult to identify. This webinar will address this issue and present an approach aimed at better understanding these issues: resource mapping and expenditure tracking (RMET). The examples from Burkina Faso and Madagascar will be highlighted, and a panel discussion will allow us to identify how this approach can help improve PHC financing. Program Manager, CIVIC: The Civil Society and Social Innovation Alliance & Global Partnership for Social Accountability / Global Lead for Citizen Engagement, World Bank

?? On the sidelines of CSW69: "Catalyzing Change: Scaling Civil Society-led Solutions for Global Challenges" ?? Yesterday, CIVIC: The Civil Society and Social Innovation Alliance, Ban Ki-moon Foundation, and The Global Financing Facility (GFF) co-hosted a dynamic panel on strengthening civil society’s role in advancing the SDGs. I joined inspiring panelists who emphasized that grassroots organizations are not peripheral solutions—they are essential to achieving sustainable development and must be a core part of the financing architecture. High-level policymakers, donors, and civil society leaders joined the session to explore how grassroots networks drive progress on health, gender equity, and climate resilience. The discussion underscored that sustainable development requires local communities to have power and resources to lead solutions. ?? H.E. Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, opened the event with virtual remarks by addressing today’s global challenges and opportunities, emphasizing that “development is most effective when citizens and civil society are meaningfully engaged in solutions that are not just reactive, but proactive”. He also highlighted the central role of gender equity in shaping impactful responses to health and climate crises. ?? Kate Landon, CAP?, Executive Director of the Ban Ki-moon Foundation, moderated the conversation and stressed the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, noting: “Civil society is key to building resilient communities and shaping policies that prioritize people.” ?? María Teresa Rodríguez, Executive Director of Fundación #Guatemala, shared how grassroots women are rehabilitating land and shaping climate solutions: “Communities must have unrestricted funding to respond to their realities. True resilience comes from investing in those on the frontlines.” ?? Violet Shivutse, Global Chair of Huairou Commission and Director of Shibuye Community Health Workers, raised a key challenge: “Grassroots women receive funding for programs but not for organizing, coordinating, or sustaining partnerships with governments.” ?? Oyeyemi Pitan, Executive Director of Gem Hub Initiative and CSO Representative on GFF’s Investor Group, reinforced the need for accessible financing for local CSOs: “Invest in systems. Strengthen grassroots structures. Support civil society not just with funding, but with capacity-building and an enabling environment.” This conversation reaffirmed that collaboration between civil society, governments, and development institutions is crucial to shaping policies that ensure development effectiveness and sustainability. By investing in community-led innovations, we can create lasting impact. Let’s work together to drive meaningful change! ? Celebrating a Decade of Progress ? Last week, we met with global health leaders and politicians in Oslo to celebrate 10 years of collaboration between the Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and The Global Financing Facility (GFF) towards advancing maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. State Secretary Stine Renate H?heim reaffirmed Norway’s unwavering commitment to investing in global health and the vital role of collaboration between governments and multilateral organizations. Success Story: Tanzania?? The Safer Births Bundle of Care (SBBC) program in Tanzania was showcased as a success story, demonstrating a dramatic reduction in newborn and maternal mortality. Public health pioneer Tore Godal said: “Progress has been slow in relation to maternal and newborn health since 2020. It’s stagnated and we haven’t had a clear answer on how to attack this. Now what GFF and Laerdal are doing together… for the first time, we see a dramatic breakthrough in this area. This is revolutionary. The key appears to be the quality of services and a more comprehensive approach to the delivery of services. For me, after 55 years, this is the most exciting moment in global health and betterment of mankind.” Investment in Health Norad Director General B?rd Vegar Solhjell praised the SBBC project for its impressive, documented impact, saying: "We are concerned that aid money should go to things that have a documented effect. What the (SBBC) project has achieved here is enormously impressive.” Luc Laviolette, Head of Secretariat for the GFF, also expressed enthusiasm for scaling the program, noting Norway's significant contributions as not only a donor, but also an important thought partner. Associate Director for Health at UNICEF, Fouzia Shafique, called for stronger partnerships and scalable innovations, highlighting the success in Tanzania as a model for how to integrate product, program, and service innovations. GFF Head of Staff, Diwa Samad, maintained the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights as a priority and the expansion of GFF support to bring innovations to scale to end preventable maternal and child deaths by 2030. There’s much work to be done, but we were inspired and energized by the spirit of collaboration and willingness to work towards a world where all births are safe. #saferbirths #gff #NORAD #helpingsavelives #globalhealth
