Every two minutes, a woman’s life is claimed by #cervicalcancer — a largely preventable disease — and yet, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine could save up to 560,000 lives every year. While cervical cancer is a global challenge, Africa pays the heaviest price: Among the 20 countries with the highest cervical cancer burden, 19 are in sub-Saharan Africa. Sunday, November 17 is the World Health Organization's Cervical Cancer Elimination International Day of Action. To raise awareness of the challenge — as well as a call to action — join us as we take a look at what’s being done to scale up life-saving HPV vaccines throughout Africa, where the GFF continues to work with partners to support HPV-related programs, along with efforts to integrate prevention across health systems. In the #CentralAfricanRepublic, the SENI-Plus project has increased the use of quality essential health services, particularly for women and children in rural areas. Since its rollout in 2022, the project—funded by a World Bank IDA grant with additional financing from the GFF—has reached nearly 475,000 women and children and is helping to save lives. New reports launched by The World Bank track #healthfinancing trends and outlook through 2029 . . . The reports reveal troubling trends across low-income countries (LICs) and lower middle-income countries (LMICs), exposing serious risks to the necessary growth of public investments in health. For many countries, achieving the SDG health targets is increasingly out of reach, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action to address mounting financing challenges.
