2024 was the year of women’s sports. From #collegebasketball to the #Olympics, female athletes shined, and Americans took notice. Women’s sports have been around for decades, but why are people only now paying attention? Because social media has given these athletes a way to increase their exposure and grow their personal brands, according to YouGov Sport. YouGov's proprietary panel found that nearly half of avid sports fans (47%) indicated that their feelings about individual female athletes impact their decision on whether or not to watch women's sports. More generally, 61% of all women’s sports fans selected individual athletes as a reason for them to tune in. More than half of sports fans (52%) follow a female athlete on social media, according to YouGov data. The top athlete followed was #SerenaWilliams, followed by #SimoneBiles, #AlexMorgan and #AngelReese.
