    "SWEATA WEATHA!" NOTHING gets me more in the mood for fall quite like the SNL Bronx Ladies. Their over the top excitement for sweater weather is infectious and hysterical. But beyond the laughs, there’s something about the changing of the seasons that really hits home. As the leaves change and fall, there’s a beauty in that transformation, a reminder that letting go of the old makes room for something new. Retirement is a lot like that. Just like swapping out your wardrobe, retirement requires preparation. You don’t just wake up one day in your coziest knit—it’s all about preparing for the shift. Just like the trees shed their leaves, we must prepare to let go of old routines, finding grace and fulfillment in the process. You need to swap out the old (work deadlines, daily grinds) and make room for the new (adventures, passions, and a bit more "me time"). It’s all about embracing the change ahead and planning for it with intention. With thoughtful planning, this stage of life can be as beautiful and colorful as the autumn leaves, full of promise and renewal.     DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a political post! Watching the Democratic National Convention last week, I saw a strong parallel between our work with clients and the story of President Biden passing the baton to VP Kamala Harris. It made me think: How would all of this play out differently if we genuinely acknowledge and value the contributions of our retiring senior leaders and build the expectation that the final part of their job is to prepare their successors? What if instead of the last-minute shift from Biden to Harris fueled by Biden's inability to beat the opponent, there was a more strategic expected transition that acknowledged Biden's achievements and highlighted Harris's readiness to take on the job without painting a picture of a feeble president? What if Biden's retirement was not seen as an inability to lead but a natural progression or handoff to the next generation? What if, as a society, we focused on celebrating contributions and preparing people to pass on their knowledge instead of sidelining them when they're no longer in the spotlight? What if the end of a career wasn't seen as a conclusion but as an opportunity for experienced professionals to guide the next generation?? Instead of "putting out to pasture," we could encourage a culture of mentorship and continued engagement.? We've seen the benefits of a phased retirement approach that values gradual transitions and sustained contributions. Many retirement-age employees become more productive in their final years and stay on as consultants after they retire. Some of our clients are adopting this mindset, investing not only in onboarding new talent but also in "offboarding" in a way that respects the experience of those nearing retirement. For example, some invest in their employees by offering comprehensive retirement planning support, which focuses on much-needed life planning in addition to financial planning.? Yet, not all organizations have embraced this shift—many struggle to foster creating a safe space for open conversations about retirement. If we created a culture that values people at every stage, leaders may feel more comfortable transitioning, knowing their impact continues and their legacy lives on.     60% said they'd return to work for their employer part-time AFTER retirement. Here's the story ?? The CHRO of a company approached us because he wanted to develop a shared exit strategy with each of his retirement-age employees (basically, he wanted everyone to be on the same page as to when they planned to retire and what could be done to support them in their transition). He also wanted to know if there was any interest in a "phased retirement" where, after leaving, they'd still be open to work on a contract basis. So, we came in and ran our Accelerator Program so that each employee could create their own Future in Four Steps life plan (meaning that they now have not only an exit strategy but an exciting and fulfilling retirement life plan). Then, we did a post-session evaluation, and we found that 60% of employees who went through the program were interested in coming back! When he shared these astounding results with the board, they invested in creating a return-to-work pilot program.     Today marks the start of Older Americans Month, a month-long celebration acknowledging the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. ?? When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third, or 33%, lived in poverty, and few programs met their needs. ?? It's remarkable how times have changed. The US Census Bureau reports that there are now nearly 58 million adults ages 65 and older.
