Welcome back from Iceland to the Fowler Center Director Megan (Schulstad) Buchter, MBA, Professor Jose Olavarria, and all of our #ThinkImpact students and MGMT 315 students! We can't wait to hear all about your adventures. #studyabroad #sustainability #socialentrepreneurship
Last week I had the privilege of traveling to Iceland with a group of Case Western Reserve University undergraduate students that were a part of my MGMT 315 Managing in a Global Economy: Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship short-term study abroad class and the Fowler Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit's #ThinkImpact cohort. It was a truly amazing week of getting to experience the beauty of Iceland along with learning more about entrepreneurship and the business landscape as well as the opportunities that exist in the sustainability space in Iceland. Thank you endlessly to all of the amazing individuals and organizations that we had the chance to visit: Jacob Kaminski from The Iceland School of Energy at Reykjavik University, Carbfix to learn about their pioneering climate technology specializing in capturing and storing CO?, Sverrir Helgason and Jóhann Már Helgason from Wolt who really helped our group understand the Icelandic attitude towards innovation, SORPA bs., a waste management company in Iceland responsible for waste collection, recycling, and disposal in the Reykjavík metropolitan area, the US Embassy Reykjavik where we met with Joshua Bull and his team who shared with us all about entrepreneurship and bilateral business relationships between the US and Iceland, and Húsasmiejan, one of Iceland’s largest home improvement and hardware retail chains where we heard from Emilia Borgthorsdottir their Environmental Specialist & Sustainability Manager who’s incredible passion really inspired our group. We also spent one day at Green by Iceland and Business Iceland. Thank you to Magnus Halldorsson for hosting our group and sharing the exhibit about Iceland’s renewable energy journey. We had the chance to be joined by Gudmundur Sigbergsson and Alondra Silva Mu?oz from the International Carbon Registry (ICR), an entrepreneurial venture and global platform that facilitates the registration, tracking, and verification of carbon credits from environmental and climate projects. The group then split into four teams and tackled four business challenges before presenting back to the Green by Iceland team. Thank you to the team at Bschool Travel that helped me organize the trip and the local team at Liberty Iceland. And thank you to Jose Olavarria for traveling with me and helping me keep track of everyone all week.?You are very appreciated. Finally, an enormous thank you to all of my students for their participation in this adventure. It was an honor to receive so many compliments about this group and I’m so proud of all of you!
