Today's Pop-Up Drive Thru distribution served 500 families, right in time for Thanksgiving weekend. A big thanks to the volunteers who made it possible, as well as the Dayton Police Department for sending officers to help manage traffic. We were excited to see our friend Officer Doris Teegarden again! Doris used to help out with our weekly Drive Thru. Her hard work and compassion are apparent to all who know her, so it was no surprise to us when she was named a "Hometown Hero!" (See article for story: https://lnkd.in/gg59adTB)

Despite the cold, snow, and mud, today’s mass food distribution at the Dixie Twin Drive-In was unforgettable—Who Dey, the Cincinnati Bengals mascot, joined us to lift spirits and interact with the crowd! With the incredible help of 130 CareSource volunteers and our dedicated Foodbank team, we braved the weather to serve 1,574 families right in time for the holidays. Special thanks to CareSource for sponsoring this event, Dixie Twin Drive-In for use of their venue, SICSA Pet Adoption and Wellness Center for passing out pet food, the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for giving out children's books, and Rush Transportation & Logistics, Inc. for their help transporting the food. According to estimates from @ReFed, this Thanksgiving Americans will throw away 316 million pounds of food, but there are some ways to help reduce your food waste and get the most out of your holiday meals! - Plan ahead by figuring out how many people you'll be feeding, putting together a shopping list of what you need after checking your cabinets to see what you already have, and include how much you need of each item so you know you are buying enough (but not more than you'll use). To calculate how much to buy for each guest, check out this handy online "Guestimator" calculator that will help you figure out exactly how much you should buy to feed each person: https://lnkd.in/eTQuAyD - Save your peels for future meals! Vegetable peels and meat trimmings can be used to make tasty broths and soups. Or make some yummy potato chips by seasoning and baking your potato peels. There are lots of fun recipe ideas online to get some inspiration! - Don't forget about your leftovers. Store your leftovers in clear containers and mark the containers with the date and what items are inside so you know how long they've been stored. You can also share your guests favorite items and give them leftovers to take with them to enjoy at their own place. There are also lots of fun ways to reuse items to create new dishes like bread pudding made from stale rolls or leftover turkey chili to use up some of your leftover turkey meat!
