Charity Adams Earley was a Dayton resident and trailblazer who led the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the first and only all-Black, all-female battalion in WWII. Her leadership broke barriers and ensured that millions of letters reached soldiers fighting overseas, boosting morale and keeping hope alive. Today, her legacy of perseverance and excellence lives on right here in Dayton through the 6888 Kitchen Incubator, a space dedicated to empowering local food entrepreneurs. Just like Charity Adams paved the way for future generations, 6888 Kitchen is creating opportunities for small business owners to thrive and build a stronger community. Want to support their work? With the first day of spring arriving tomorrow, the Urban Garden team is starting to get ready for the upcoming outdoor growing season by starting some of our plants indoors! Each season we start our pepper and tomato plants indoors using artificial lighting and heat mats. Once these seedlings are big enough, we'll transplant them into larger pots to continue growing in our little hothouse style greenhouse. In May, the plants will then be ready to move to their final home outside in our raised garden beds where they'll produce hundreds of pounds of fresh produce that will be harvested and distributed to our neighbors. Are you planning to grow your own veggies this year? Check out our planting guide to see when you should start different plants based on our local growing conditions! #LettuceTurnipTheBeet #UrbanGarden #PlantingGuide

Today is National Ag Day! Farmers, farmworkers and other food producers are vital partners in the movement to end hunger. We are grateful to work with local organizations like the Lucas Brothers Farm, Mile Creek Farm, Narrow Way Farm, E&K Family Farm, Guided By Mushrooms, Seven Seed Sowers, and Oberlin Food Hub. Together, we connect USDA foods with people facing hunger, fostering a strong food system that's beneficial to all! #ThankYouFarmers #AgDay25
