Meeting old friends and new connections in person, thanks to the magic of LinkedIn DMs. Two weeks ago .... Sylvia Gorajek, Founder of America Unlocked, reached out to me via a LinkedIn DM to ask me if I wanted to grab coffee her during her quick trip to San Francisco. Miriam Gutierrez, Business Development Manager The California - Spain Chamber of Commerce, reached out to me to invite me to their Spanish Women Shaping the Future of Technology event, San Francisco. And I am so glad they did. Both the coffee meetup at Sana'a Cafe, a beautiful Yemeni cafe and the event at SAP were on the same date and within walking distance of each other, so it made going into the city so worth it. Many people underestimate the power of LinkedIn DMs or just use it to send sales pitches. - They help you stay connected even when phone numbers and email addresses change. People switch jobs, move to different cities, and update their contact details—but their LinkedIn profile often stays the same. So even if you lose touch, you can still reconnect with a DM. Here are some other reasons why you should tap into LinkedIn DMs - Access to decision-makers: Unlike cold emails, LinkedIn DMs let you reach executives and industry leaders directly without any middle man, increasing the chances of a response. - Networking beyond borders: Whether local or global, LinkedIn DMs make it easy to connect with professionals and nurture relationships no matter where they are. I always use them when I travel to reach out to folks in my network who live in that city or country. - Leads to real-life opportunities: A single DM or series of messages can open doors to job offers, partnerships, new clients, speaking gigs, and in-person meetups. I have had so much success with finding sponsors, speakers, inviting guests for my events through sending meaningful and relevant DMs. - Strengthens your personal brand: Proactively engaging through DMs by referencing shared connections, interests, recent posts or upcoming events makes messages more relevant and engaging. - Ensures your message gets seen – I believe only 5 - 10% of your connections see your LinkedIn posts due to the algorithm unless they gain engagement, but a DM lands directly in their inbox, ensuring they don’t miss something valuable. Do you use LinkedIn DMs regularly? And what do you like using them for? -- I'm Nyna Caputi, Founder/CEO The Expat Woman and a LinkedIn Coach and Trainer Nyna Caputi
