Alumni connections can be the fabric of your foundation if you let it…. Steven M. and I have a new episode of The Digital Fix -sponsored by Carnegie dropping next week where we happen to be discussing how higher ed is changing in today’s environment. Strangely enough (and unbeknownst to them) both guests (Todd Woodward and R. Ethan Braden) were University of Notre Dame alumni. Where someone went to school often comes up on episodes of The CMO Suite podcast as well. Just last week I was recording an episode with Radhika Duggal - CMO at Major League Soccer about her journey now coming full circle with an opportunity to give back to her alma matter by teaching. I was texting fellow University of Central Florida graduate Chris Tomasso today to give him some props on the absolute massive year his company First Watch Restaurants group has had under his stewardship. This post below from MiO Marketplace partner Chad Tons is just a reminder that your origin story doesn’t leave you when you graduate… it often plays one of the most important chapters of your story. BTW: Chad Tons and his team at Infinity Marketing Team, LLC is a group you should know - I’m grateful to Alyson Griffin for the introduction ??
Food, Family, Marshall School of Business, USC, Entrepreneurship…all my favorite things ‘sushi rolled’ into one. I’m incredibly excited to introduce the Tons Family Cafe…an engaging environment where students can eat, study and network. I’m also extremely humbled to be included in the USC Marshall School Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. To be a part of a collection of such groundbreaking leaders is truly an honor. Fight On! ? Is Retail Media a revolution, evolution or just the same first party targeting but with a few new bells & whistles? That was part of the hypothesis posed by a recent article in The Drum along with what factor Amazon Ads is playing in homogenizing the system itself. With additional thoughts around the expanded terminology as “commerce media” to include expanded networking. With this coming on the heals of things like dentsu releasing there Retail Media Industry Report for 2025, which included a fairly expanded soup of “players”, it’s no wonder the Wild West is looking to be tamed. It begs the question - why now? Not an unfair question and one many of us like The Digital Fix podcast and The CPG Guys are often discussing with industry experts and one that will certainly be top of mind at Shoptalk this year. My opinion - often shared with marketers we talk to as part of MiO Marketplace (and one not necessarily pondered by the Ben Foulkes article) is perhaps is it’s as much about time as it is about money. ?? Investment and buying teams at both the larger agency groups like OMD and independent groups such as Mediaplus Group need to ensure teams are operating efficiently - a somewhat impossible task if they need 75 different platform connection points. Historically it’s why rep firms were invented by traditional media and to some extent why Google Ads and The Trade Desk become billion dollar businesses. It’s also why groups like Criteo, CitrusAd, Walmart Connect and many others made the Dentsu list. Marketers and their corresponding agency teams need efficiency because after all time is still money. Leave an opinion below …. ?? Drum link: https://flip.it/5B4MZ4
