While philanthropy makes up a teeny tiny portion of charitable giving in the US, it holds significant potential. At The David Prize, we think investing directly in people has outsized dividends for our communities and society. Thanks Kate Warren spotlighting the Prize in this helpful roundup of how philanthropy is evolving.
The old philanthropy playbook isn’t working—and at SXSW, funders and nonprofits made it clear: it’s time for reinvention. With government funding shrinking and political scrutiny rising, nonprofits are facing new pressures and challenges. But rather than retreat, some philanthropies are taking bold risks. ?? “If you’re not thinking about aligning your investing dollars with your mission, then you’re leaving a huge social change lever on the sidelines,” said Sarah Haacke Byrd of Women Moving Millions. ?? Some organizations are shifting power to communities. The Waymakers Collective lets grantees vote on future funding, while the Ford Foundation is backing community-led grantmaking and guaranteed income programs. ?? Women-led philanthropy is gaining momentum—with $32 trillion in wealth set to transfer to women by 2030, expect to see more trust-based, unrestricted funding. ?? "We invest in the person, not the idea," said Erika Augustine (Boll) of the The David Prize, which gives $1M a year in unrestricted funding—no strings attached. Philanthropy’s shift isn’t just about where money goes—but who controls it. A few weeks ago, First Tech Fund was honored to receive The Surprize from The David Prize—a $5,000 no-strings-attached microgrant designed to pay it forward to New Yorkers who are nominated by past David Prize winners. I'm extremely grateful to Talia Scott for the nomination + the entire David Prize team for the support and for creating the video below about our work ?? ???? Yesterday The New York Times broke news highlighting one of Family Justice Law Center's groundbreaking cases, determining that in New York City, child welfare agencies no longer have a right to routinely investigate parents who report being abused. Congrats, David Shalleck-Klein and your whole team on this historic win. https://lnkd.in/d6Eatmat

A note for NY: https://lnkd.in/eSdmjrnE New Yorkers have always dreamt up and built the future of this city—this isn't new or limited to a moment. It's a reminder that whatever the world has in store, New Yorkers have, and always will, have this city's back. Today is no different.

It is with both tremendous excitement and sorrow that the piece about #HipHopTherapy I worked on alongside Ephraim Weir for American Educator, a quarterly journal published by the American Federation of Teachers AFT is finally here. I am trying to create space for the profound fulfillment I feel for the publication of my first peer-reviewed journal article and the gutwrenching emptiness in the fact that the young man who helped make it happen is no longer with us. Ephraim has been integral to my story, and I could not have done this without him. The part he wrote is devastatingly beautiful. I feel incredibly blessed to have gotten to share such a special experience with him reminiscing on the days we first met and how far we both came. His story is a testament to the strength and hope of the youth I have the privilege of working with on a daily basis, and I could not be more grateful that we were able to do this together before his untimely passing. I miss you brother, and I love you. See you at the crossroads. #HipHopTherapy #HipHopEducation #AmericanEducator #AFT #AmericanFederationOfTeachers #TheRightToRap #MentalHealthMatters https://lnkd.in/e5BbjDtH
