Laura and I got last minute front row tickets to see Rhod Gilbert last night at The Playhouse in Edinburgh!! Rhod recently got the all clear from cancer so was performing his new show “Rhod Gilbert & the Giant Grapefruit” (a nod to his neck tumour) His comedic ode to cancer was a masterpiece and I can honestly say I’ve never laughed and cried at a comedy show, but when he played his end video and you saw firsthand what he had endured and the gratitude and sheer guts of the man it was hard to hold back those tears ?? I’m fortune enough not to have had cancer but know many who have and who are sadly no longer with us physically ???? I’m a great believer in the power of laughter to ease suffering or to deliver a powerful message and what we witnessed last night was a masterclass in how to do that ???????? It was truly inspiring listening to a man who has faced death and come back to life with a bang and many a laugh as well He interacted with cancer patients in the audience and had everyone of them and us in stitches, despite the difficult subject matter you could feel the happiness and love in the room If you get a chance to catch this show please do as it was phenomenal on so many levels Mr Gilbert, we wish you many more happy years of life and making people laugh!! ?? Trinity saves Neo in the real world, giving him the belief he needs to rise again inside the Matrix. Suddenly, he sees the truth—the rules he thought were unchangeable are just an illusion. With that realisation, he vanquishes the Agents and becomes unstoppable. ?? This moment is symbolic of the transformation I help specialist contractors achieve as The Contract Coach? ? In this story: ?? Neo is the specialist contractor—the hero of the construction industry, trapped by fear and conditioned to believe they must accept unfair contracts, late payments, and mistreatment to survive. ?? Trinity is me. My job is to help them see the truth: the fear they’ve been fed is a lie. The power has been in their hands all along—they just didn’t know it. ?? The Agents? I was reminded of this recently when I asked a coaching client what the single biggest takeaway was from the programme. His reply moved me to my core: “That’s easy. I’m no longer afraid.” ?? This client had come to me weighed down by fear—fear of challenging unfair terms, fear of pushing back, fear of losing work. But by the end of the programme, he saw the truth: ? There is no spoon. ? Are you content with your content? ???? If you follow my posts and articles, you’ll probably have noticed by now that I like to infuse my posts with a sense of humour. ??? And lots of emojis. ??♂??? I appreciate that the subject matter I talk about isn’t really a laughing matter, but my view is that’s all the more reason to make light of it. ????? I do this because when something in life is hard or stressful, having a sense of humour can be a life saver. I know that especially recently having lost my mum ???? So it occurred to me that in order to change such a toxic industry as construction we would need to do something different. ???? Laughter and comedy make people feel good. Remind them of their humanity and for a fleeting moment they’re in a state of serene joy. ???? So that’s when you deliver a message of hope. ????? That together we can change the way our industry works. ???? We can laugh at Richard Head the Tier 1 leg end. ???? When you really think about it, people follow me on here. ???? So in my mind, I imagine if someone met me on the street or in a bar or restaurant, at a networking event or in a helicopter, I wouldn’t pretend to be someone I am not. ????? What you see on here is what you get in real life. ???? I’m not perfect, but I’m me and I believe that if more people were, we would have a lot less stress and conflict on this piece of rock we call home. ???? Just my thoughts to share this morning. ???? People said I’d never get over my obsession with helping #specialist #contractors… but take a look at me now! ?? And yes, I really am still standing here, looking at you all, because this obsession is never going away. ?? This industry is personal to me. Growing up, I witnessed my dad’s business collapse because he wasn’t paid for the work he’d done. ?? It wasn’t just numbers on a balance sheet—it changed our lives. And I’ll never forget the lessons that came from that. Now, I’ve made it my mission to ensure other specialist contractors never have to say, “All I wanted was a fair deal, but it’s all falling down.” ?? I know how much heart, pride, and skill go into the work you do. ???? I also know how much unnecessary stress, unfair treatment, and financial risk you face—and that’s something I can’t ignore. But like Phil said, “There’s just an empty space where hopes and dreams should live.” That’s exactly what I’m here to change. ?? Helping specialist contractors work smarter, stress less, and build businesses that actually support your lives is what drives me. ???? It’s my obsession—and honestly, I think it’s a pretty good one to have. ?? Friday thoughts ?? Death isn’t the end. It’s a doorway. I’ve been reflecting on life and legacy recently, and the words from one of my all time favourite films ?? Cloud Atlas come to mind: “Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others, past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.” I believe that when people die, they return to the universe—not the body, of course. The body is fragile, finite, and eventually decays. ?? But the energetic echoes of who we are—our kindnesses, struggles, lessons, children and other creations—live on. ?? I think about my mum and my natural mum too. What they stood for shaped me in ways that words can barely capture. Their love, their struggles, their strength—they all matter. ?? And I carry their legacy forward in my own actions, even when I don’t realise it. Our lives truly aren’t our own. ?? We’re part of something far greater—woven into a tapestry that stretches across time. What we stand for, what we give, and how we show up ripple through the lives of others, long after we’ve walked through the doorway.
