Are you unintentionally stifling the potential of introverts in your organization? In a world that often celebrates extroversion, introverts can find themselves overlooked and undervalued in the workplace. But what if the key to unlocking your team's full potential lies in understanding and leveraging the unique strengths of your introverted employees? Imagine the frustration of an introvert, bursting with innovative ideas but struggling to be heard in a sea of louder voices. Picture the sense of relief and empowerment they'd feel in an environment that truly values their contributions. As a leader, envision the pride and satisfaction of nurturing a diverse team where both introverts and extroverts thrive side by side. Leaders often fail introverts by: 1. Misinterpreting quietness as disengagement or lack of ideas 2. Favoring spontaneous brainstorming over thoughtful reflection 3. Overlooking their unique strengths in deep thinking and careful analysis To lead introverts effectively, consider these strategies: 1. Provide advance notice: Give introverts time to prepare for meetings and discussions. This allows them to process information and formulate their thoughts, leading to more meaningful contributions. 2. Create space for reflection: Incorporate quiet time or break-out sessions in meetings. This gives introverts the opportunity to digest information and develop ideas without the pressure of immediate response. 3. Offer alternative communication channels: Encourage the use of written communication or one-on-one discussions. This allows introverts to express their ideas in a format that plays to their strengths. 4. Recognize and value their contributions: Actively seek out and acknowledge the input of introverted team members. This builds their confidence and encourages further participation. 5. Balance team dynamics: Create a mix of group and individual work. This ensures that both introverts and extroverts have opportunities to shine in their preferred environments. How can you start adapting your leadership style to better support the introverts in your team? What changes can you implement in your next meeting or project to ensure everyone's voice is heard? Remember, true leadership means creating an environment where all personality types can flourish and contribute their best work.

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, talking points with engineers is salary... This article is a positive one because we've lost a lot of talent due to low salaries in civil engineering compared to other industries. Hopefully this is a trend in the right direction as our infrastructure is being increasingly tested and the need for good engineers that are forward thinking continues to grow. We are seeing the most increase when it comes to junior engineers that are acquiring their PE. In most parts of the country having a PE is pushing up on being a $100k+ salary now. What are your thoughts on the current compensation levels for civil, geotechnical or structural engineers?

Quick Friday resume tip... Name your resume file with YOUR NAME!! As an example mine would read "Brandon McGill Resume 2024" This helps to find your resume if it gets misplaced, shows you've updated it and is simply more professional than a random file name representing yourself. I couldn't tell you how many resumes I've received that were random file names and it's always something I change before submitting to clients. Devil is in the details folks, don't overlook these types of things. #resumetips #civilengineer #geotechnicalengineer
