With the rise of AI and new production software, it’s more important than ever that artists have full ownership over their work. There are so many ways for IP to be misused and distributed without consent. We need to build systems that allow artists to maintain control over their output in the long term. Our current approach to copyright, ownership and royalties isn’t equipped for our current climate. Urgent action is required if we are to protect the rights of artists and their ability to safeguard their legacy. There’s a problem with streaming services. No one really knows how they work. The value of a stream, the data behind the music, it’s all kept opaque. For artists to take control, they need to know how the system functions. The lack of transparency in streaming is only damaging artists and limiting their ability to advocate for a more equitable industry. Calculating the monetary value of a song being played shouldn’t be enmeshed in overly complicated systems. There’s room for a lot more simplicity and a lot more openness about how artists are paid for their work. ??

We place so much value on the music we love. But for many artists, that value doesn’t translate into a livelihood. Empowering artists means making sure they get a fair share of the profit made off their creativity. That means innovating a new music industry that works for everyone and puts money in artists’ pockets. With how readily available music is to us, we take it for granted. It’s easy to forget the people behind the music, but they deserve a fairer deal. Let’s make music work for the artists. ??
