Thea Energy is building an economical and scalable fusion energy system utilizing arrays of mass manufacturable magnets and dynamic software controls. Commercial fusion energy can uniquely provide a limitless source of zero-emission power for a sustainable future. Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in computation and controls to reinvent the stellarator, a scientifically mature form of magnetic fusion technology. Thea Energy was founded in 2022 as a spin-out of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Princeton University, where the stellarator was originally invented. Thea Energy is currently designing its first integrated fusion system, Eos, based on its planar coil stellarator architecture which will produce fusion neutrons at scale and in steady-state.

We are pleased to be selected alongside other leaders in the #ClimateTech space for IRCAI - International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO and AWS Startups’s? #ComputeForClimateFellowship which will provide access to high performance #computing (HPC) and hardware resources.?? ? As part of the Compute for Climate Fellowship, we will greatly expand our #stellarator physics optimization computing tools, allowing us to rapidly iterate the plasma equilibrium design for our first integrated #fusion system, Eos, and subsequent Thea Energy fusion power plants.??? ? Central to a stellarator is an optimized plasma equilibrium (the confinement of a hot plasma fusion fuel at ~100 million degrees Celsius, finely tuned for physics and engineering constraints). Establishing the equilibrium for Eos will require exploring a vast design space by leveraging computational resources and specialized physics codes.? ? While prior stellarator architectures were restricted by fixed hardware to set one specific plasma equilibrium, Eos will utilize controllable magnet array hardware allowing for an unprecedented ability to implement a range of different stellarator equilibria. With 1,000+ inputs and outputs, our planar coil stellarator can be dynamically controlled. This results in a unique ability for us to leverage HPC, #AI, and #MachineLearning to re-optimize equilibria for efficiency as we continue to learn, while also correcting for hardware variability. This week, I had the honor of participating in the inaugural ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (#WFEG) among other #fusion industry and government leaders from around the world. Thank you to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Italian Foreign Ministry for hosting what marks an important moment for fusion. One of the main insights from the meeting: fusion technology has made enormous progress in recent years, accelerated by the work of private fusion companies. Now via organizations like the WFEG, International cooperation and strategic partnerships will further drive progress towards commercializing this form of abundant #CleanEnergy. The inaugural meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) was hosted today in Rome by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Italian government - with heavy participation from the fusion industry, government leaders, & senior officials from around the world. Opening speeches were delivered by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, and Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano. Grossi underscored the transformative potential of fusion, noting that recent technical advances, combined with private sector investment, are bringing commercial fusion power closer to reality. "Fusion energy had once been a distant dream, but with major technical breakthroughs and increasing private sector involvement, it is now within reach." - IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi The panels and discussions that followed featured updates from the global private and public sector, including a fusion industry status update from Fusion Industry Association (FIA) CEO Andrew Holland, and many commercial fusion updates from FIA member companies. With a strong turnout from industry, government ministers, and senior officials, the WFEG’s inaugural meeting marks a pivotal moment in fostering international cooperation on the path to commercial fusion power. ?? Thank you to the FusionX Group team for hosting FusionXInvest:Japan this week in Tokyo where we discussed the scaling of a #fusion industry and its supply chain. The conference also focused on the formation of critical strategic partnerships, and how Japan’s national strategy can support the commercialization of fusion. During the “Investment & Partnership in Fusion Innovation” session, I had the opportunity to share more about Thea Energy’s recent progress constructing software-controlled superconducting magnet arrays to reinvent the #stellarator.
