Celebrating Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Today, we honor women entrepreneurs breaking barriers and shaping the future. This year, we are proud to spotlight Easy Meets, an innovative startup from our 2024 Venture Incubator and Competition cohort. Meet the Founders Marwh Nabil and Basmalla Attia, the creative minds behind Easy Meets, are redefining how we plan group hangouts and trips. Their entrepreneurial journey led them to win the Standard Chartered Women+Tech grand prize of $15,000 in our 2024 Venture Incubator and Competition to propel their venture. Marwh’s journey: From pre-med to entrepreneurship, she shares, “When I joined my first competition, I didn’t even know how to spell ‘entrepreneurship,’ but I fell in love with it instantly.” Basmalla’s perspective: “Entrepreneurship is pure joy—it’s about taking risks, persevering, and solving problems that truly make a difference.” On this global day of recognition, we celebrate the resilience, vision, and impact of founders like Marwh and Basmalla. We're a startup incubator at the City College of New York working with early-stage student-led startups.

The Zahn Innovation Center was established in late 2012 with the goal of mobilizing the entire City College of New York community around entrepreneurship. The Center offers over $150K in funding through our competitions – supporting hardware, tech, and social entrepreneurs – as well as access to mentors from various industries, legal services, cutting-edge prototyping facilities (including 3D printing and laser cutting) and other programming dedicated to ensuring that our talented entrepreneurs find success. The resources of the center are focused on helping these startups address the unique challenges associated with prototype development and product design, as well as provide mentorship, market research, business planning and community connections for our companies to evolve from a great idea into viable ventures. The center also intends to build and grow a strong hardware, software and social enterprise community in New York, and will provide prototyping services, events and classes aimed at expanding the knowledge base around entrepreneurship, technology and engineering.

It is always a pleasure and an honor to have Torry Berntsen and colleagues from Standard Chartered including Valerie Pholpituke visit The City College of New York - this time the timing worked out to arrange Torry to visit the class "Aligning Profit and Purpose" which seemed especially appropriate in the context of our long-standing collaboration with Standard Chartered and their Futuremakers initiative.
In honor of celebrating Global Futuremakers Week at Standard Chartered, I recently had the pleasure of visiting The City College of New York and speaking with students at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. It was inspiring to engage with young people in the class, “Aligning Profit and Purpose.” We talked about the role each of us can play in building a positive impact on the world. I shared my journey from early in my career, stressing the importance of doing the right thing, continuously developing your skills, working hard, and being an important advocate for your own career. It’s conversations like these that remind me of the power of sharing real-world experiences with the next generation. I left feeling incredibly hopeful about the future after seeing how passionate these students are about sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Their commitment to shaping a better world is exactly the kind of energy we need. To the future leaders and changemakers: keep questioning and keep learning.
