关于我们

The Young People’s Project (YPP) develops students aged 8-22 from traditionally marginalized populations as learners, teachers, leaders, and organizers through math (and STEM) literacy, community-building, and advocacy in order to build a unique network of young people who are better equipped to navigate life’s circumstances, are active in their communities, and advocate for education reform in America.

  • In Miami, young people didn’t just show up—they stepped up. The day began with action. A Math Playground at the Black Archives - Historic Lyric Theater brought together 200+ people from Miami-Dade County for an interactive, high-energy math experience led entirely by young facilitators. Students from Overtown Youth Center and Miami Northwestern HS took charge, joined by young leaders from: ?? Brownsville Middle School ?? Miami Northwestern HS ?? Miami Central HS ?? Booker T. Washington HS ?? Liberty City Elementary ?? Turner Tech HS But this moment didn’t happen overnight. Leading up to the event, a small group of Greater Boston Math Literacy Workers connected with these Miami youth over Zoom, and prepared them to facilitate the Math Playground for their own families and communities. Over two weeks, they mastered eight YPP math games, diving deep into the concepts and strategies needed to make math engaging, accessible, and fun. And after hours of interactive math, leadership, and community engagement, the conversation shifted to reflection. That evening, the Counted Out documentary screening brought the focus to the larger movement for math literacy. The powerful film, which challenges how we think about math education and equity, set the stage for new community dialogues. A panel discussion, hosted by Brian Williams of the Bob Moses Research Center at Florida International University, featured director Vicki Haberkorn Abeles and our own Executive Director, Maisha Moses, sparking deep conversations about the systemic changes needed to ensure all students have access to quality math education. This is the work we’ve been building towards, guided by the footsteps of our movement’s pioneers (hats off to them!). Special thanks to Dr. Dorothy Fields, Ph.D., for welcoming us into this historic space, where young people didn’t just participate—they led the way. ?? #MathLiteracy #CountedOut #EducationForAll #YouthLeadership #YPP

YPP had the exciting opportunity to bring the Math Playground to the Needham STEM Festival at Eliot Elementary School, MA. Organized by STEM advocate Prerna Bhargava, her family, and a small team of volunteers, this annual festival invited K-5 students and their parents to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. This year, YPP was thrilled to be part of the festival, sharing our dynamic approach to making math accessible, fun, and meaningful. The Math Playground, the brainchild of Samuel Freeman, Greater Boston Site Director, is a concept that debuted at the 2024 National #Flagway Tournament, transforming math into an engaging, festival-like experience through hands-on games. It was at the 2024 Flagway Tournament that we first met Prerna Bhargava and her son, who were drawn to the Math Playground experience. Prerna’s son, pictured above, loves the Random Walk game! After seeing the impact it had on her son, who couldn’t stop making Random Walks, Prerna was inspired to expand the offerings at the Needham STEM Festival, inviting YPP and other local STEM based initiatives to bring fresh, interactive math activities to the event.

  • Meet Atheeb, our MLW Story featured this week. "Being part of YPP has been both challenging and rewarding. On my first day, I was so nervous—it felt scary to be responsible for kids who weren’t much younger than me. But once I embraced my role and believed in myself, I started to feel more confident. Now, I enjoy what I’m doing, and I’ve learned to make it fun while keeping things organized and engaging. YPP has taught me the importance of listening—not just hearing, but truly understanding what others have to say. I’ve also grown in patience and responsibility, which my parents have definitely noticed. Being a leader here means more than making decisions; it’s about stepping back, letting others share ideas, and doing what’s best for the group. Looking ahead, I want to be a problem solver and a collaborator. Working with my peers at YPP has shown me how to bring people together, share ideas, and create plans—a skill I’ll carry into the future and use in every aspect of my life."

  • The White Peril book launch tour is in New Orleans today and tomorrow at 2 different venues in Jackson. His author, Omo Moses born in 1972 in Tanzania and raised in a black community in Cambridge, Massachusetts, deftly interweaves his own life story with excerpts from both his great-grandfather’s sermons and the writings ?of his father, the civil rights organizer Bob Moses. The result is a powerful chorus of voices that spans three generations of an African American family, all shining a light on the black experience, all calling fiercely for racial justice. At once a coming-of-age story, a multigenerational family memoir, an epic father-son road trip, and a searing account of the black male experience, The White Peril powerfully revives Rev. Moses’s demand for liberation. Checkout the full tour itinerary and registrations at: https://lnkd.in/ezk-YPPU
