The Young Dreamers’ Bookstore is a mobile book retail startup founded in 2022 for young children and their families. We provide dream-centered and enriching children books that “meet kids at their dreams.” We proudly feature books that herald protagonists of African descent from across the globe. We seek to assist children in seeing the connection between reading books and creating dreams of personal fulfillment and social consequence. Earlier this month, we had another opportunity to inspire a love of reading among students in our city. The day began with the Pitt Women’s Lacrosse Team undergoing literacy engagement training, where they learned how to facilitate a dream-centered and inspiring read-aloud experience. In addition to the read-aloud, each student from Faison Elementary had the chance to select a book aligned with their dreams or personal interests. The day ended with children joyfully expressing their gratitude for an exciting and memorable experience. Creating these amazing reading opportunities is so important for the young people of Pittsburgh. It brings me great joy to partner with the University of Pittsburgh Office of Engagement and Community Affairs’ P.E.E.R. Program. With every book a student takes home and every read-aloud that is shared, we strengthen the connection between reading and dreaming! That’s what makes this work so rewarding and meaningful. Special thanks to my colleagues Branden Ballard, MA, Jamilah Ducar, EdD, and Samantha Varela for their tireless efforts in bringing joy to the hearts of children in our city. Another amazing book fair!
Last month, through our dream-centered partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Office of Engagement and Community Affairs’ P.E.E.R. Program, we trained Pitt student-athletes to lead dream-inspiring read-alouds. After the training, students from Weil Elementary visited the library, where each child walked away with a high-quality, dream-centered book to keep their excitement and curiosity growing beyond the event. Students even got a chance to play catch with members of the Pitt Football team! It was truly a day filled with joy, learning, and inspiration! Last night, we popped up at AscenderPGH’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration with a specially curated selection of books for the occasion! Attendees enjoyed an amazing personal branding workshop by Nayli Russo and celebrated the winners of our Ascender Mini-Grant. The event was full of laughter, great food, and vibrant energy! Partner Shoutout! Last week, we delivered a bulk order to our partners at Neighborhood Learning Alliance PGH including Way Past Mean by Halle Aldermen and Keep Your Head Up by Aliya King Neil. Both books were written to support students in their social-emotional development. During our delivery, we were excited to see NLA’s growing library, which has been built over the past two years through purchases from our bookstore. This carefully curated collection aligns with NLA’s programmatic themes, enriching the experiences of the students they serve. A special shoutout to Kashif Henderson for his dedication to helping children grow into their best selves through enriching reading experiences.
