Congratulations to our friends at Critical for launching their fantastic firm. We are happy to be in partnership with you guys to bring funding and support to the next-generation of incredible founders.
Today I’m excited to announce the launch of our firm, Critical. In many ways, this began a long time ago. Growing up, the people I admired most spent time on problems that mattered. This began with my parents, a doctor and a journalist. In college, I met students who took a similar approach. Zack and Jake were tackling the opioid crisis and Ofek was expanding food access. They saw things that were broken and began doing something about it. We started Critical for these founders: young people who see the world as their responsibility. Critical is an inception stage venture firm that invests in exceptional students tackling major crises. Our thesis is that student founders have historically built the world’s most valuable companies and this time around they’re solving pressing challenges. This is already happening. Halen, Luke, and Michael, are creating fossil-free fuel & chemicals; Matthew is mining metals from electronic waste; Gregory is developing a new way to diagnose life-threatening diseases. We’re grateful to partner with them. With that, I feel lucky to build this firm with people I admire. My co-founders are my twin brother, Sam, and longtime friend Seungkwon. Since we were kids, Sam and I had an unspoken dream that we would one day work together. It’s not accidental that we call Seungkwon our triplet. We founded Critical with Wharton’s amazing Tyler Wry, the first believer in this mission. David Beisel has become one of our closest mentors. Gus embodies the type of empathy I strive to have. And our 39 incredible student investment partners inspire my day to day work. We’re grateful for our backers and thought partners, a mix of founders, investors and healthcare & energy executives, including Adam Miller, Aarti Chandna, Gary Swidler, Dan Mendelson, and Seth Goldman. Thank you to John, Lauren, and Goodwin; Nils, Lisa, Michael, and the whole John McNeil Studio team; Notably; Or and Chen for the day to day; and Tim De Chant for covering our story. In the next decade, students will build some of the most innovative solutions to today’s urgent problems. If you’re a student founder working on something that matters, I’d love to talk.

Entrepreneurs spend countless hours building their startups, but how often do they focus on building themselves? ?? Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Michael Baum, serial entrepreneur and founder of The Yope Foundation, for a special event where he heard pitches and shared valuable insights that challenged the way we think about founder success and emphasized the importance of rethinking Founder Performance. ?? Founders should be treated like Venture Athletes. Just like elite athletes optimize their mindset, energy, and performance, founders need the same level of support and training to work smarter, prevent burnout, and sustain long-term success. Shifting the focus to the whole founder is critical to fostering entrepreneurs and helping the next world-changing ventures reach their potential—and that’s exactly why the YOPE Foundation is working to empower founders with the tools they need to thrive. A special thanks to?Antonio DiMeglio, J.D., and his venture,?Coeus Collective,?for helping to make the day such a success! ?? Learn more about the event, the three pillars of Founder Performance, and other insights from the day in our recap at: https://lnkd.in/ei97YCRT Interested in being part of the YOPE accelerator? ?? Our NYU application is open until March 31st. Thank you NYU Stern School of Business for a special event last week. We heard fantastic student pitches and engaged in great conversation about how optimizing your performance is a game changer as a founder. We're invested in human excellence just as much as venture success. To assume you can build a great venture without a great founding team would be to put the cart before the horse. Special shout out to Cynthia Franklin and your wonderful team for hosting us, and Coeus Collective for live streaming the event.

Yesterday at Drexel, Michael dropped some hard-hitting truths: Founder performance isn’t just an advantage—it’s survival. If you want to build something that lasts, you need the endurance, resilience, and mindset to sustain high performance over time. As he put it: ?? “Running a company is an endurance sport; it requires sustained peak performance at the highest level and a mindset of growth, grit, and resilience.” At Yope, we don’t just fund founders—we build them. If you're a student or recent alum with an impactful tech venture, apply now at yope.org/apply. ? $100K in funding ? 1 year of elite coaching from top founders ? A community that pushes you to go further, faster Thank you to Chuck Sacco & Drexel University's Charles D.
