115TH ANNIVERSARY OF KATHARINE WRIGHT’S FIRST FLIGHT With Wilbur piloting the Wright Model A Flyer, the flight in Pau, France, lasted seven minutes and four seconds. Katharine’s skirt being tied down while in flight may have influenced a fashion craze—the hobble skirt. Caption: Pictured are siblings Orville Wright, Katharine Wright and Wilbur Wright. The series of flights was primarily training flights with his three French students. On 09 Feb 1909, Wilbur flew at Pau for 19 minutes in the presence of Louis Blériot, French aviator. On 03 Feb 1918, dinner arranged by Mayor Alfred de Lassence, with 200 English-speaking guests attending, commemorated the first flight by Wilbur at Pau nine years earlier. WRIGHTS IMPROVE ON LILIENTHAL’S DATA Caption: Lift balance photo included in 19 Jan 1902 letter to Octave Chanute. Aviation pioneer, Octave Chanute, pursued an extensive correspondence with the Wright brothers. On 05 Jan 1902, Wilbur sends Chanute data sheets resulting from wind tunnel test with instructions for making computations. Follow-up correspondence to Chanute on 19 Jan 1902 includes photograph and description of Wright pressure-testing instrument, that is, the lift balance used in the Wright wind tunnel. These lift balance tests helped determine Otto Lilienthal’s data was off by a value of 0.0017. (Note: The materials used to build the lift balance were readily available in the Wrights’ bicycle shop, e.g., old bicycle spokes.) The Wright Brothers Memorial Banquet sponsored by Bravo Golf was held in the Eagle Hangar at EAA Air Museum. Paul Dye, the longest-serving NASA flight director, was the keynote speaker. It is always a marvel to hear of the inspiration the Wright brothers had on so many who have taken to the air, and space, since the first flight. #WrightBrothersMemorialBanquet?#BravoGolf?#eaa #eaaairmuseum?#pauldye?#thewrightbrothers #wilburandorville

Thank you to the National Aeronautic Association and its member, the AERO CLUB OF WASHINGTON, for 75 years of acknowledging stalwarts in the industry via the awarding of the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy!
In 1948, immediately following the death of Orville Wright, the National Aeronautic Association established the Wright Memorial Trophy. In 1949, the NAA and its member, the AERO CLUB OF WASHINGTON, began a partnership for the annual presentation of the award. To learn more, look here: https://lnkd.in/eBdw_fem On December 13, 2024, the NAA was honored to present the Wright Memoral Trophy to the incomparable (late) B. Ben Baldanza. Accepting from NAA’s Board chair, Jim Albaugh, was Ben’s family, his widow Marcia and son Enzo. His legacy includes an indelible mark on commercial aviation. Ben’s creativity and passion not only paved the way for millions of people who never thought they could afford air travel, but also inspires the way aviation leaders think about our industry. Congratulations Marcia and Enzo! It’s the NAA’s distinct honor to celebrate Ben’s life and impact. And, thank you ACW for another amazing evening! 125 Years Ago, Wrights Write to Weather Bureau Caption: This initial letter was sent by the Wright brothers to the U.S. Weather Bureau, dated 27 November 1899. From their bicycle shop—Wright Cycle Company—on West Third Street, Dayton, OH, Wilbur and Orville continued their correspondence searching for a secluded place with regular breezes and soft sandy landing surfaces. They received a prompt and friendly reply from the Weather Bureau office in Kitty Hawk, NC, which helped to convince the Wrights that the local sand dunes were the best place to conduct their experiments.
