Longevity is a triumph of human endeavor and public policy. But are we fully prepared for its implications? With over one-third of the population in low and middle-income countries projected to be over 60 by the year 2050, we must address the challenges and opportunities that this rapid demographic shift presents. Today, we launched our new report: "Unlocking the Power of Healthy Longevity: Demographic Change, Non-communicable Diseases, and Human Capital." It's a wake-up call and a roadmap for the future. Key insights from the report: 1. Healthy longevity is about more than just living longer—it's about living better. It means reducing avoidable deaths and serious disabilities throughout life, improving physical, mental, and social functioning well into older age. 2. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a critical challenge, accounting for over 70% of deaths in low- and middle-income countries. The poorest are most vulnerable, creating intergenerational poverty traps. 3. A life-course approach is essential, encompassing child nutrition, education, and policies like taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks. 4. Gender equity is crucial. While women generally outlive men, they face higher NCD burdens, longer periods of disability, and fewer resources to address these challenges. 5. The economic impact is significant. Done right, healthy longevity could save 150 million lives in low- and middle-income countries by 2050, yielding substantial economic benefits. This isn't just about the elderly—it's about all of us. Investing in human capital now promotes healthy longevity, creating a win-win for sustainable development. The World Bank Group is committed to supporting countries with knowledge, data, and financing to support healthy longevity. Our latest goal - reaching 1.5 billion people with better health services by 2030 - expands primary health care beyond maternal and child health to include services for preventing and treating non-communicable disease. Aging is an opportunity, not a burden. It's time to flip the narrative and embrace a holistic framework for healthier, more productive aging across the lifespan. The International Development Association (IDA) is vital for low-income countries, offering crucial development funding. IDA is gearing up for its 21st replenishment round (#IDA21) to accelerate progress toward a world free of poverty. Over 800 civil society organizations (CSOs) from various regions have provided insights shaping the policy framework for IDA21, focusing on critical issues like job creation and gender equality. Reforms already underway in IDA—as part of the World Bank Group’s evolution—align with some of the points consistently raised in CSO forums: IDA introduced a new scorecard to track progress across 22 indicators, promoting transparency and accountability. There is new global momentum to tackle chemical pollution, but for more sustainable and sound chemical management, we must continue to work across society: ??The chemical industry must invest in green and sustainable chemistry to anticipate, replace, avoid, and prevent the adverse effects of large-scale chemical use. ??Governments must have the insights, political will, and capacity to set guardrails for the use of chemicals. ??Consumers and civil society must be smart, as not every product that appears to make our daily lives easier is good for us. Partnerships are vital in coordinating the work on addressing and managing chemical pollution for a #LivablePlanet.
