The lab of Wistar Institute President and CEO Dr. Dario C. Altieri has uncovered a novel mechanism in Parkin beyond the protein’s association with Parkinson's disease. The study, published in JCI, found that Parkin suppresses tumor growth by activating the innate immune response via interferon production and T cell recruitment. Though we may associate microorganisms with disease, the microscopic menagerie within our bodies is essential to human health – from the microbes on the skin to the bacteria in the gut, nonhuman cells contribute to our well-being by working as partners. The Wistar Institute’s Dr. Rahul Shinde studies the mechanisms of how the gut microbiome can work against, but also for, the body’s ability to fight certain cancers. His lab has identified how the metabolic by-products of certain gut microbes can positively influence anti-tumor immune responses and immunotherapy outcomes for pancreatic cancer. Interferons aid in our natural defense against disease, but the molecules have complex roles that have yet to be fully understood — particularly in HIV, where certain interferons work for and against the virus at the same time. In a new paper from the Montaner lab published in the Journal of Immunology as the journal’s Top Read for the September 15th issue, scientists from The Wistar Institute developed a new method to study the role of interferons in the lab: cloned human anti-interferon antibodies. “These novel, effective human antibodies against Type I interferons have the potential to be an indispensable tool for understanding and ultimately serving as immunotherapy for cancer and autoimmune or infectious disease conditions,” said Luis J. Montaner, DPhil, Executive Vice President, director of the HIV Cure and Viral Disease Center, and Herbert Kean, M.D., Family Professor.
