Initially hired by The Wine Company to work in administrative roles, Mike soon transitioned into sales where he excelled for ten years before we dragged him into management. The combination of his fluency with our systems and his familiarity with our partners and culture made him both invaluable and irresistible. Mike’s knowledgeable, empathetic, and approachable leadership style is hard to come by and has earned him trust and respect both inside and outside of our Frogtown offices. “I’m honored and excited to step into the role of Sales Director at The Wine Company. ESSAY | SA | South Africa “Essay” refers to the popular abbreviation for South Africa (SA) as well as implying an “assemblage” or blending of things to create a whole greater than its parts. Produced by partners José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, Essay Wines consists of two blended wines produced in a Mediterranean style representing the best from the Agter-Paarl area. The vineyards are unirrigated and planted on old Malmesbury shale soils producing wines with distinctive flavor and texture. ESSAY WHITE Chenin Blanc is known for its generosity of fruit and friendliness towards most foods. This wine shows typical Chenin Blanc aromas of pineapple, litchi, and guava. A few months of lees contact enhances the texture of this wine, while still maintaining a fruity palate and fresh finish. The addition of Viognier and Roussanne adds complexity with each component contributing its distinctive characteristics to the blend, bringing out hints of pear, melon, and granadilla. ESSAY RED This is a medium-bodied blended red wine with an expressive nose and a soft, lush mouthfeel. Syrah gives ripe plum and dark fruit notes on the nose and palate. Grenache softens the palate adding floral notes and together with the Shiraz forms the backbone of the blend. Mourvèdre adds complexity with savory leather and spice aromas. Cinsault gives red fruit notes and a soft, lush mouthfeel to the final blend. Overall, the wine shows depth and finesse, but with gentle tannins.
