Kicking off this year-end impact season with a story shared by our Lakota partners: The Great Race ?? – where Magpie’s ingenuity and resourcefulness secured victory for the two-legged nation. As we face a time when sacrifices will be inevitable, WILD.org remains unafraid to take on bold and challenging goals. Like Magpie and our forebearers – Ian, Magqubu, Vance, and Maggie – we rely on creativity and nimble problem-solving, not brute force, to make a difference. ?? Commitment, community, and creativity carry us across our chosen finish lines. Your support helps us punch above our weight to protect #wildlife and #wild places. ?? Join us! Dive into the WILD12 resolution ‘Urgent Mineral Withdrawal for all of the Black Hills ’! ?? The Black Hills are unceded Lakota territory, guaranteed for their "absolute and undisturbed use" by the Fort Laramie Treaties of 1851 and 1868, which remain upheld as supreme law under the U.S. Constitution. ?? However, the Black Hills, sacred to the Lakota, are threatened by #mining activities that violate the treaties and cause irreparable damage. The Lakota have called for a halt to mining through the U.S. Forest Service’s Mineral Withdrawal process, which would block new mining claims for 20 years. A proposed Mineral Withdrawal at Pactola Reservoir and Rapid Creek is currently supported by multiple Lakota councils and tribes. ??? For this reason, the resolution calls for supporting the Mineral Withdrawal at Pactola and advocating for its expansion to include the entire Pactola Reservoir and Rapid Creek Watershed. ?? "The state of South Dakota issues mining permits in as little as one day and has over three hundred mining permits pending so we are still fighting to save our way of life and preserve our land. And we are teaching our young people to fight so that when our elders pass, they can continue to fight until we get our land back." -Rick Two Dogs, at #WILD12. ?? Dive into the #WILD12 resolution ‘Empowering Ecological Outcomes by Honoring Treaties’! ?? Indigenous Peoples, including the Oceti Sakowin Oyate, have signed treaties recognizing their inherent sovereignty. ?? Currently, the Oceti Sakowin Oyate occupy less than 2 million acres as national governments violate these #treaties, negatively impacting their communities and the environment. For instance, the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) was approved in 2016 on treaty lands, threatening sacred rivers. ??? For this reason, the resolution calls for respecting and enforcing all treaties with Indigenous Peoples, resolving disputes as equals, and restoring the primacy of traditional laws of Indigenous Nations in national constitutions and courts. ??
