Grief is a profound, transformative experience that alters our very perception of reality. Theresa R. Gibson, LCSW, will be presenting at our upcoming Wellness Summit, offering her expert insights on the psychological, neurological, and existential impacts of grief. In her session, Grief as an Altered State, Theresa will explore how the loss of significant attachments disrupts the brain’s sense of self, creating a psychological disequilibrium that can be both disorienting and painful. Theresa will share how healing isn’t about erasing grief, but about learning to coexist with love and loss in a new definition of self. ?? Date: March 29th, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM PT ?? Location: Online (Free Attendance) ?? The Political Climate is Harsh? ? In a world where politics has grown to be as dogmatic–with at least as many fervent believers–as most religions, emotions run high. That understatement reveals political rage as an increasingly common, and disturbing, symptom among the clients who seek help from mental health professionals.? ? The polarized political environment in which we live force-feeds emotions such as fear, frustration, and outright rage. Add in the 24/7 news cycle and the fact that even comedy shows are politically affiliated, and we have a formula for an extremely toxic mix of things for people to be upset and angry about. A Group Process and A Team Sport? ? What is hypnodrama??This definition?from the APA Dictionary of Psychology tells us that it is a form of psychodrama. In hypnodrama as it is defined here, the live psychodrama client is placed into a light trance state before going through the process.? ? Psychodrama, traditionally, entails the externalization of scenes from the client’s life. In the scenes, fellow group members play the roles of individuals involved in life events. Psychodrama allows the client to hear the words that were spoken to them at a time of trauma, and work toward resolution through corrective experiences. Why Is Change So Scary? The concept of change can be quite paradoxical, particularly when it comes to working with our clients. People come to us because they say they desire to think or do something different, yet they often use all their might to resist the very changes they want to make.? ? Part of the problem arises from the way we all tend to see ourselves. “That’s just the way I am!” is a thought form that most of us have lived by at one point or another. Keeping ourselves–and things in general–the same, whether those items involve the way we express ourselves or what we do, helps us to make life predictable. Scary Signs of the Times Despite all the posters, mugs, and t-shirts that have been urging us to “Keep Calm and Carry On” over the last several years, financial panic is real. Uncertainty about the markets, rumors about cryptocurrency and central bank digital currency, exacerbated by the ever-rising costs of everything from eggs to heating oil, has created a great deal of angst about money, how to earn it, and how to keep it.? ? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs illustrates how crucial it is for human beings to feel secure about satisfying their basic requirements. When people fear that they won’t be able to afford items such as housing, food, and utilities, the fear and anxiety become overriding obstacles to a feeling of safety, security, and survival. Prosperity begins to feel like a dream that’s impossible to reach. Self-Doubt is a Competence Killer? ? Seasoned practitioners as well as new mental health professionals recognize the power of self-doubt. We feel it all the time. What makes us qualified to guide others as they struggle to find solutions to major problems? Did I make the right diagnosis? Am I taking the right steps with this client? How do I handle treating a disorder I’ve never worked with before? Attention Deficit is a complicated issue. It affects clients in different ways, and manifests in a variety of symptoms. In some cases, medication alleviates these symptoms and helps clients function more effectively. Clients also benefit from talk therapy, including CBT and DBT, and can use specific techniques, including mindfulness practices, that promote greater focus and improve organizational skills.? ? Many of the symptoms sufferers exhibit, especially low self-esteem, anxiety, relationship problems, and substance abuse, are extremely debilitating. Maybe your client comes in asking you for help with an annoying habit, such as nail biting, hair pulling, or compulsive picking at wounds and scars. Or, you might notice the signs your client displays, including eyebrows or eyelashes that are pulled out, a constant rubbing of dry skin against the lip or face, or even the biting or pulling of skin off the lips.? ? What can you do? Asking clients if they want help with any one of these or other disorders could be helpful, but shame and embarrassment might prevent them from talking about their problems, so they will continue to suffer.?
