I had an opportunity to attend and present at the 2024 Global Implementation Conference (GIC) in Abuja, Nigeria last week. For the last year, the Nigeria Implementation Science Alliance (NISA) has collaborated with the Global Implementation Society (I am on the GIS Board) on this event. We had record-setting attendance that increased visibility for impactful implementation research and practice in Nigeria and the broader West Africa region, enhanced collaboration between international partners, and provided a model (with lots of lessons learned) for coordinating future GIC conferences with partners. This was the first GIC in our history to be hosted in a low and middle income country (LMIC), and NISA was 100% the best possible partner to undertake this challenge with their well-established annual conference, supported by skilled leaders Echezona Ezeanolue, MD, MPH, John Olawepo, the IVAN Research Institute, and Caritas Nigeria. Special thanks to Ngozi Idemili-Aronu for phenomenal support to all of the GIS team. There were great examples of collaboration between US-based researchers like Gregory Aarons and Rohit Ramaswamy, funding organizations like Fogarty International Center at NIH, and program offices such as PEPFAR and USAID with Nigerian experts and organizations on the frontline of global health and infectious disease management. There are real opportunities to take best practices from Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa and spread and scale their successes and innovations to other countries (Note: infectious diseases do not respect our silly human borders), but it will take sustained infrastructure, funding, and partnerships to maintain readiness for the next pandemic and the ongoing health and climate threats present in West Africa. There are also opportunities to expand the conversation to social welfare, climate change, mental health, and other applications. We are looking forward to future collaborations, most notably the inaugural meeting of the Asia Society for Implementation Science Alliance in November 2025 in China. Dr. Dong (Roman) Xu served as keynote speaker at the 2024 GIC, and his team was well-represented. GIS Board Members Malabika Sarker and Saima Hamid are working to strengthen implementation capacity and international collaboration in that region. Lastly, I was overjoyed to spend time with GIS President Niveen Abu-Rmeileh, Treasurer Ejemai Eboreime MD,PhD, PMP, FAPH, and our support team Peggy McElgunn and Madeline McElgunn over several days learning, laughing, and dreaming about how to expand our horizons after the first 8 years of GIS's existence. The possibilities are very exciting! #impsci #nerdingout #globalhealth
