For this year’s Tribal Water in the Southwest virtual conference (https://lnkd.in/dka3G4sB), we have joined forces with The Water Report US to offer a very deep dive into water issues for Tribes in the region. The February Water Report focuses on water management in the Southwest and will be part of the materials for the conference. The March issue focuses on funding water infrastructure and is particularly timely due to Trump Administration funding cuts for Tribal and other infrastructure projects. It also will be part of the materials. Complimentary copies of the two reports are available at https://lnkd.in/daJDkGfZ. Register soon to benefit from what will be a full discussion of Tribal water issues in the Southwest.

?? Can Nature Help Solve the PFAS crisis? A Bacterial Breakthrough! ???? PFAS—often called "forever chemicals"—have earned their name because they do not easily break down in the environment. These synthetic compounds are found in everything from non-stick cookware to firefighting foam and have been linked to serious health and environmental risks. Despite ongoing efforts, removing them from soil and water has been a persistent challenge. But what if nature already holds part of the solution? ?? A recent study has identified a bacterial strain, Labrys portucalensis F11, that can break down PFAS—including PFOS, one of the most stubborn and hazardous forms. Even more promising, this bacteria can further degrade some of the harmful byproducts left behind after PFAS starts breaking down. ?? Want to learn more? ?? The Future of Water Availability: What the Latest USGS Assessment Reveals ?? Water is at the heart of everything—communities, industries, and ecosystems all rely on a stable and clean supply. But how much do we understand about where water is available, where shortages exist, and how quality impacts supply? The latest National Water Availability Assessment by USGS sheds new light on these critical questions. ?? Key Takeaways of the Assessment: ? 30 million people live in areas with limited surface water supply, highlighting growing challenges in water-stressed regions. ????? ? Water quality matters just as much as quantity—pollution and contamination affect how much usable water is actually available. ???? ? Advanced models fill in data gaps, offering a more complete picture of water conditions from 2010 to 2020. ???? As demand for water increases, understanding availability is more critical than ever. ?? ?? Groundwater’s Hidden Journey: A 100,000-Year Story Beneath Our Feet ?? Did you know that rain and snowmelt can travel underground for up to 100,000 years before resurfacing? A groundbreaking study has revealed just how far and deep groundwater moves, with some flows spanning over 100 miles before emerging in rivers and streams. More than half of streamflow comes from deep aquifers, reshaping our understanding of water availability, pollution risks, and long-term sustainability. ?? With groundwater depletion rising and contamination risks growing, how can we better protect these vital underground reserves? What new strategies are needed to balance use and conservation? How will climate change reshape groundwater flows in the future? Understanding the invisible journey of groundwater is key to securing water resources for generations to come. ?? Want to go deeper into these findings? Discover how this study changes the way we think about groundwater and why it matters for the future.
