Our STEM Like ME!? Explore program at Pasco High School is making STEM careers a vibrant reality! This program emphasizes the importance of engaging STEM professionals to ignite student interest in these fields. Volunteers from Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) utilized hands-on activities to share their STEM knowledge. In small groups, students applied STEM skills to tackle real-world challenges. Over 70 students enjoyed exploring local STEM career opportunities. The dialogue with WRPS volunteers inspired students to articulate their own career goals. Since 2008, the Washington State STEM Education Foundation (The STEM Foundation) has engaged the Mid-Columbia region’s top leaders from business, labor, K-12, higher education, and the community at large in initiatives to advance STEM education and career connected learning opportunities. In addition, we design and scale innovative STEM programing across the state. Our impact is leveraged by working as both the Southeastern Washington Network for Career Connect Washington, one of nine regional hubs, and the Mid-Columbia STEM Network, one of 11 Washington STEM-led regional networks. Our vision is to ensure that by 2030: ? 70 % of Mid-Columbia students will earn a post-secondary credential by age 26. ? The STEM-proficient workforce will be nearly 100 percent home-grown and include a high percentage of groups typically underserved in STEM careers. ? Local schools—elementary through university—will be highly regarded as national models for business, labor, and community involvement as well as innovative STEM learning.

Our STEM Like ME!? Explore program was a great success at Chiawana High School! These in class programs are such a great way to bring STEM careers to life. Students at Chiawana High School explored STEM industries through hands-on activities. STEM leaders shared their career journeys, which encouraged students to engage with questions and connect their own career aspirations. Working in small groups allowed students and volunteers to naturally develop career-connected learning experiences. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by both students and volunteers provided inspiration and offered a promising glimpse into the future of our workforce. Thank you volunteers Giovanni D. Do you know an educator who excels at teaching STEM? An educator who is always looking for creative ways to inspire their students and promote STEM learning? Our partner,?WM?Symposia?is launching a new STEM Educators’ Council, which will provide STEM educators with a venue to network, share best practices, and access resources. You are invited to submit nominations for the inaugural slate of members. Membership is open to U.S. and non-U.S. educators in K through 12 as well as higher education, in both traditional and non-traditional environments. The Council is designed to serve as a resource for educators?who?will have access to: · An expanded network with other educators and STEM professionals · Classroom resources including curricula, educational items, and an inventory of STEM-focused literature, brochures, and videos from across the nuclear industry · Nuclear industry subject matter experts and ambassadors · Professional-development opportunities and resources Council members?will also?have the opportunity to attend the annual WM Symposium at a discounted rate and participate in sessions targeted specifically for educators. The third annual STEM Like ME!? Empower Student Summit, held at CBC, was an inspiring event. It fostered connections between the community and classroom through strong partnerships with local STEM leaders, KiBe High School students, and Columbia Basin College. The STEM Like ME!? Empower program aligns closely with the state-required High School and Beyond Plan. It provides students with tools and training to identify their personal strengths, interests, talents, and traits that influence their career choices and job satisfaction. The event was filled with meaningful discussions about potential career pathways. Students had the opportunity to engage in discussions and collaborate closely with STEM professionals throughout the day. Hands-on activities helped students connect their interests and passions with STEM careers available in our area. Various disciplines were explored, including engineering, fire science, chemistry, agriculture, computer science, and many more. We at The STEM Foundation want to extend a special thank you to all of our magnificent STEM volunteers from Navarro-ATL and the Hanford Site. We appreciate the CBC mentors and panelists, as well as the CBC and KiBe staff. Also, thank you to the students of KiBe. Grateful to have been part of an incredible all-Spanish STEM night for migrant parents and their high school students at Kiona Benton High school! ?? Tonight, we had the opportunity to introduce migrant families in Spanish to the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in a way that was both fun and educational. Parents participated in a hands-on slime experiment, showing that science is not only about learning but also about having fun. This event was designed to prepare parents for the upcoming STEM Like Me field trip to Columbia Basin College (CBC), where their students will explore STEM careers. Opportunities like this don’t often come around in small rural schools, and I’m so proud of the collaboration between our team, the STEM Foundation, and the WSAC Regional Challenge Grant to make it happen. A special shoutout to Dr. Elsa and her husband, whose inspiring presentation truly made the night unforgettable. ??
