Two weeks later, I still have great memories of attending the Deming Leadership Seminar in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 16 and 17. It was, I have to say, a flawlessly delivered event which covered both the enormous scope and the immediate practicality of Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge. A fun aspect was being able to “experience” some of the thinking traps that lead so many companies astray. In one exercise, tables were assigned departments of a fictitious company (based on real-life scenario) and instructed to use conventional management practices to meet the siloed KPIs we’d been assigned and to disregard any problems our actions might create for the rest of the company. There was lots of laughter as we did all the familiar things – cut costs, tightened credit rules, squeezed suppliers, let quality go to the dogs. The facilitator reported the quarterly numbers, and guess what? By Q3, we were well on the way to destroying the company. What a lesson!
