??Breaking into industry as an academic in 2024 is so discouraging, because a PhD makes you simultaneously overqualified for skill and underqualified for experience. What the hell is "experience"? I interviewed at Google, Meta, Tinder, Spotify, Amazon, Netflix, Apple... All companies tested two things in addition to technical skills: 1?? Product Sense This will often be assessed via intentionally vague product questions: "We just built a vending machine concept. Launching in 2 months. How do we ensure a smooth launch?" Your answer should NOT be about: ? Smooth launch You answer SHOULD show: ? I have a solid grasp of the product cycle. ? I speak the language of the industry. ? I know exactly how to conduct or adjust research to fit business needs. 2?? Stakeholder Communication This will be assessed through a "Behavioral Interview". Different companies have their own idiotic framework you need to follow. e.g., Amazon thinks their S.T.A.R. (Situation -> Task -> Action -> Result) method is cool. You gotta STAR your way through. Different companies also have their "principles" you need to show. e.g., Amazon has 16 "Leadership Principles". Meta has 5 "core values". ? If you don't have 5+ behavioral scenarios locked and loaded, ? If your answer meanders and doesn't hit any "core values", ? If you don't clearly show your ability to communicate with cross-functional ??holders... You will fail the interview. ***************************** The 2024 industry market is saturated, competitive, and employer-favoring. You cannot wing it like in 2018 and luck into an offer.
