The Vandenberg Coalition is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the philanthropist, conservative champion, and business pioneer Bernie Marcus. Bernie was a one-of-a-kind leader, who fought every day for his principles in both his personal life and his philanthropy. He recognized the importance of moral courage and conviction in all that he did, serving as a tireless champion of his home city in Atlanta, of the American Jewish community and the state of Israel, and of the principles of democracy, freedom, and community. His is a great American story. From the founding of hugely successful Home Depot in 1979 to his extraordinary philanthropy, Bernie deservedly stands as a true legend. Bernie consistently embodied the Jewish and American values of giving back and remembering those around him. Bernie’s foundation, the Marcus Foundation, has given over $2.7 billion to charitable causes, ranging from medical research, to veteran initiatives, national security, Jewish community, support for Israel, and children’s welfare. We are proud to have been among those supported with Bernie’s generosity and kindness, and we are forever grateful to have had the opportunity to know him. The world – and so many individual lives – was made better by having Bernie in it.? Our heartfelt condolences to the thousands of people who knew him, loved him, and worked with him.
