Every year at our winter conference in Arizona, our Fellows have the option to climb Camelback Mountain during their free time. This challenging 3-hour hike is rated "extremely difficult" with steep grades. Last week, fifteen Fellows successfully climbed to the top. The next day, a few of them shared how essential the encouragement of those around them was in helping them to persevere and reach the summit. The Van Lunen Center's mission is to equip Christian school leaders with executive management skills to successfully lead and serve their school communities. An important part of that work is connecting each Fellow to a network of peers to encourage them in their leadership journey. Applications for the 2025-2026 Van Lunen Fellows Program are being accepted through February 28, 2025. Join over 400 Fellows worldwide who have completed the program by visiting vanlunencenter.org to learn more and apply.

"...private Christian school leaders in the 21st century needed to be strong, consistent communicators, manage conflict well, and maintain some level of business and finance expertise." This is why the The Van Lunen Center created the Fellows and Ascending Leaders programs. Thanks for sharing, Rob!
Recently, I was reading a dissertation about how private school leaders are impacted by their unique context. What caught my attention was how closely the demands of that role mimic those of business CEOs. In particular, nearly every decision had a financial component. Given that these schools, whether they are religious or secular, charge tuition this makes sense. The following is the conclusion of that dissertation: The research suggested that finances, work/life balance, and stakeholders were the dominant factors that most controlled or constrained the decision-making process and actions of a private Christian school leader. Due to those factors being so prominent, it was determined that private Christian school leaders in the 21st century needed to be strong, consistent communicators, manage conflict well, and maintain some level of business and finance expertise. The future training of Christian school leaders should account for these factors, and this study determined that future school leaders should be trained in communications, conflict management, and business, which should be done in a way that provides real-world experience. To conclude, the biggest finding was that private Christian school leaders were business leaders and more business training and support was needed since most every decision came down to money and finances, given they were dealing with paying stakeholders on a daily basis. (this is Rob again) If you are a private school leader, where did you learn the business side of your role? Did you learn it all the hard way, do you lean on other people in your organization, or did you have formal training in those aspects of running a school? You can find the dissertation here: White, Z. R. (2023). An examination of how context affects leadership expectations and practices in private christian schools as perceived by private christian school leaders (Order No. 30573599). "I expected the program to be good and informational. I did not expect it to be such a powerful and meaningful experience - one that will propel leaders to move forward with change. Thank you." 2024-2025 Van Lunen Fellow It is a joy to equip Christian school administrators with the executive management skills they need to serve their schools successfully. Thank you to all who participated in the July conference, and to all who support our mission and vision as board members, donors, faculty, staff, alumni, and prayer partners.
