It was an emotional surprise reunion for one of our NICU nurses during a recognition event. Melba Schwinghamer, PP RN, was being recognized by leadership and fellow hospital staff when in walked Jasmine and her baby Santiel. Jasmine and Mia, the navigator from Children’s Heart Center, both credit her for saving little Santiel’s life. According to Melba and Mia, while obtaining lab work from the infant, Melba noticed a concerning cough. She checked the infant’s oxygen saturation levels and found them to be on the lower side. Concerned by these findings, Melba promptly contacted the pediatrician. Given that Santiel was born with a two-vessel umbilical cord (instead of the typical three) and had been asymptomatic at birth, the pediatrician ordered further testing. The results revealed the absence of the right pulmonary artery. A pediatric cardiologist was consulted, and after an echocardiogram was completed, the infant was diagnosed with Discontinuous Pulmonary Artery, a rare cardiac malformation. The infant was immediately transferred to the NICU, intubated, and then moved to another area hospital for cardiac surgery within hours. Mia emphasized that Melba’s vigilance and advocacy were crucial in saving Santiel’s life. Jasmine also expressed her deep gratitude to Melba for her dedication and advocacy on behalf of her baby. Little Santiel is recovering and is expected to continue doing well.
