Career Services Roadmap Series: Welcome to Week 13 (3/2/25) Reaching agreement - invitations from Steve Dalton A reflection on friendship ... and reaching agreements. "The most satisfying thing in life is to have been able to give a large part of one's self to others." ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin "In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit." Albert Schweitzer "There is no happiness like that of being loved by your fellow creatures?and feeling that your presence is an addition to their comfort," the English novelist Charlotte Bront? wrote in her 1847 book Jane Eyre. Career Services Roadmap Series: Welcome to Week 13 Reaching agreement - invitations from Steve Dalton One of the challenges and opportunities of our participants' Tri Cosain career journeys is always reaching an agreement on the next career phase.?This conclusion often means accepting paid employment, but it also can mean agreeing to join in an apprenticeship, an internship, a volunteer appointment, a part-time job, an entrepreneurial venture, or another endeavor or enterprise with others. In his book The Job Closer, Steve Dalton makes valuable offerings and invitations in this context. Dalton’s ways are not the only ways here, but we find them a valuable touchstone for many of our participants. Dalton touches on several stages of the “getting to yes.”

Sonder 1: Flourishing in Year One at College an opening reflection ... PURPOSE "To call on purpose is not to ask colleges and universities to go beyond their core mission; it is to ask that they intentionally and systematically implement their already-existing pledge -- to produce purposeful, globally engaged citizens and to do so with broader inclusivity than they may ever have done before." ~ ~ Tim Clydesdale, a professor of sociology at the The College of New Jersey. He is the author of The First Year Out: Understanding American Teens after High School. "Classically, colleges and universities have understood themselves as helping students discover a sense of purpose deeper than questions about skills and job prospects. Such descriptions are often linked to language around vocation, calling, and character." "Higher education ought to be leading the way in helping students connect their work with questions of purpose by asking deep questions about a well-lived life and through internships and extracurricular activities that put those thoughts into action." By framing questions of purpose, character, and entrepreneurial mindset more clearly in terms of what it means for human beings, individually and collectively to flourish, we as higher education leaders may see far greater impact on creating and sustaining the flourishing world at the heart of our own sense of purpose." ~ L Gregory Jones has been president of Belmont University (as quoted from "Formation for Flourishing in Higher Education: Reimagining Purpose," Virtues & Vocation, Higher Education for Human Flourishing, Spring 2024 [Doyle's note: What follows is a collection of advice gathered across the last decade from students, faculty, and staff across high schools and colleges/universities and grounded in research and evidence from leading practitioners and researchers. This document offers high school graduates and their families guidelines and frameworks to succeed in their learning, career, purpose, and life. With that in mind, we have put together these questions - to help students thrive in their new environment. LIFE LEARNING A Guide to Flourishing Year One in college/university: A first-year checklist An Academic, Leadership, Career, and Life Journey “Too often, students are put into the adult world with little or no clue how to proceed. It’s as if the history and experiences of previous graduates had never happened – as if we didn’t have sufficient research and understanding of what matters to design and build a successful college/university career. We can do better.” ~ A Chorus of Voices from?Parents/Guardians across the years -- Suggestion: Practice developing a growth mindset. "Grit is a combination of passion and perseverance for a long-term goal." "Grit is about maintaining a growth mindset and believing that your abilities can be developed." "The most successful people are not the ones who never fail, but the ones who learn from their failures." ~ Angela Duckworth

Career Services Roadmap: A Week of Thanksgiving WELCOME TO Thanksgiving Day Conversations: 2024 An opening reflection and meditation ... "Do you love holidays? Have you ever wanted to explore special holidays across the globe?" ~ Whitney Stewart "Be present in all things and thankful for all." ~ Maya Angelou “Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi "The irony is that we attempt to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole and more acceptable, but our wholeness -- even our wholeheartedness -- actually depends on the integration of all our experiences, including the falls. To love ourselves and support each other in the process of becoming real is perhaps the greatest single act of daring greatly." ~ Brene Brown "So when you are listening to somebody, completely, attentively, then you are listening not only to the words, but also to the feeling of what is being conveyed, to the whole of it, not part of it." ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti "Give thanks for a little, and you will find a lot." ~ Hausa proverb ---- Career Services Roadmap: A Week of Thanksgiving WELCOME TO Thanksgiving Day Conversations: 2024 ---- ... holiday times with family and friends can be an excellent opportunity to give and receive support and to explore new and creative ideas and directions ... As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, celebrated by many in the United States, we are also aware of the many other holidays and festivals honored by cultural and faith traditions worldwide. We are conscious that families and friends often gather at these times to celebrate connection and community, reflect, and look ahead to the future. Many of us -- including friends, family, and colleagues -- are engaged in educational and career development journeys; accordingly,?many of us, as we gather with friends and loved ones, will be considering the progress of those journeys and making decisions about the next actions to be taken in the immediate future, perhaps in the new year or as the current academic year completes. We congratulate those of you who are stepping forward into the next crucial life stages. #thanksgiving #career #friends #family #conversationsofinquiry #jobsearch #careerdevelopment #careerjourney #careerservices hashtag #Illinois #Mentorship #YoungAdults #Chicago #FutureLeaders #CareerSuccess #WolcottCollegePrep
