On this day in 1943, the first group of 71 Women Marine Officer Candidates arrived at the U.S. Midshipmen School at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. According to the Women Marines Association, “The Navy’s willingness to share training facilities enabled the Marine Corps to begin training Marine Corps Women’s Reserve officers just one month after the creation of the MCWR was announced.” #WomensHistoryMonth Photo courtesy of the Women Marines Association

On this day in 1962, John H. Glenn rose to new heights becoming the first American and Marine to orbit the Earth. His flight on Friendship 7 proved that the United States was a serious contender in the space race. Like Glenn, The Tun Legacy Foundation is reaching for new heights. On this day in 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima began. The U.S. Marines and the U.S. Navy would fight for the next 36 days before securing the island on 26 March. This battle would be one of the bloodiest in the Marine Corps history. The photo is of the Marines raising the flag on Mt. Suribachi by Joe Rosenthal and used as a model to build the Marine Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. 27 Medals of Honor would be awarded for actions during the battle. Board of Director Ken Hopper represented The Tun Legacy Foundation at The American Legion’s Veterans Inaugural Ball on Jan. 10 in Washington, D.C. The American Legion honored 22 Medal of Honor recipients, one of them being Sergeant Major Allan Jay Kellogg, Jr., pictured with Ken.

Happy Birthday, Ben Franklin! Born in 1706, Franklin is the Right Worshipful Past Grand Master of Pennsylvania Masons. He was initiated into St. John’s Lodge in Philadelphia in the early 1730s, and only after one year of joining he became a member of the committee. On this day in 1991, President George H. W. Bush announced to the American public,?“Just two hours ago, allied air forces began an attack on military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. These attacks continue as I speak. Ground forces are not engaged.” The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps played a crucial role in the largest air campaign since WW II?as allied?forces transitioned from Operation Desert Shield to Operation Desert Storm.
