Did you know November is Native American Heritage month? Join us to celebrate and learn more about Native American culture with various exhibitions and events at properties like Appleton Farms @appletonfarms and The Crane Estate @craneestate_trustees in Ipswich and Fruitlands Museum @fruitlandsmuseum in Harvard. On 11/23 there will be a Native Plant Walk & Milkweed Fiber Spinning Demo at Appleton Farms in Ipswich and on 11/29 there will be a Celebrating Indigenous Knowledge Dune Hike at Crane Beach in Ipswich. Kudos to the North Shore Education Team who is wrapping up a successful fall field trip season. Our youngest farmers, the Fiddleheads, explore every Wednesday at Appleton Farms @appletonfarms with Lee Wile and Suzanne Kelsey. Meanwhile hundreds of elementary students from Glen Urquhart School, Salem Public Schools, North Shore Christian, Brookwood School and more have visited the forests, gardens, and barnyard with Michael Walker at Appleton, and salt marsh, beach, and pine barrens with Sarah Morris & Joey Clancy at Crane @craneestate_trustees. We've also enjoyed digging into climate science at Crane with some advanced groups from Ipswich HS, and Northeastern & Brandies Universities. And we look forward to hosting Greater Lawrence Tech School and Root North Shore at Appleton later in November to explore sustainable food systems and environmental careers. The Trustees would like to welcome its newest TerraCorps member, Adam Sussbauer! Adam brings great experience and knowledge to the Trustees, we are very happy to have him on board. We asked Adam to tell us a little bit about himself and his new role with TerraCorps: Adam: “I grew up in Ashfield with a very outdoorsy family. To this end, I've been hiking on Bear Swamp and Bullitt since I could walk, where my parents would point out and teach me to identify trees, wildflowers, and anything else we could find. My early exposure to this field led me to study Earth & Environmental Science at Wesleyan University, where I worked in environmental archaeology, planetary geology, and geochemistry laboratories, among others. I now live in Granby, MA, where I am a residential advisor at the MacDuffie independent boarding school, and am thrilled to be serving with The Trustees as a TerraCorps member! As a TerraCorps member, I am working with Julie Richburg on the Ecology Team, where I am working on our grassland bird and nest box monitoring volunteer programs, biodiversity monitoring with iNaturalist, and the beginnings of culvert and stream crossing surveys. So far, I've been conducting my own field work, crunching through data from previous years, working with ArcGIS to create survey maps, and beginning to reach out to volunteers to work with us in the spring nesting season. November's full moon, also known as the Beaver Moon, is the last of four consecutive supermoons occurring in 2024. According to space.com, following August's Blue Moon, September's Harvest Moon and October's Hunter's Moon, the Beaver Moon will reach peak illumination at 4:28 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, crossing the sky beside the Pleiades star cluster or the "Seven Sisters" in the Taurus constellation. Congratulations to The Trustees own Tess Lukey, Associate curator of Native American art, for being named Boston Business Journal's 2024 40 Under 40! Tess joined The Trustees two years ago as the nonprofit’s first associate curator of Native American art with an aim of developing exhibitions and research initiatives related to The Trustees’ Indigenous art collections. It’s a personal matter to her: she is an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal citizen and her communities’ story is told in an installation at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. We are so fortunate to have Tess working for the Trustees, her knowledge and ability to tell these important stories is a really important part of the Trustees mission.
