The Tributary: Investigative news in the public interest员工

动态

  • The last couple of months have been busy for The Tributary, with stories leading to impact that demonstrates clearly how news in the public interest — reporting that centers the lives of everyday people and holds government accountable — has real-world impacts. Consider: A joint investigation with the Miami Herald revealed that many motorists who did nothing wrong are receiving violation notices under a hastily approved bus-safety program in Miami-Dade. This week, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said that the violations would be put on hold for all drivers who wish to contest their ticket, a move aimed at addressing the chaos following the roll out of the school district’s hastily-approved contract with school bus safety company, BusPatrol America. Just hours after Executive Editor, Nate Monroe's report about a potential land swap deal that could cost taxpayers millions published last month, board members delayed a vote, citing a need for more information before eventually approving putting the land swap out for bid. Senior Investigative Reporter Nichole Manna first started exposing serious health care failures at the Duval County jail in 2023, starting with the heartbreaking story of a heart transplant recipient who died after delayed medical care in the jail. Within months, state investigations were opened, jail leadership was changed, and Sheriff T.K. Waters canceled a $98 million health care contract. Earlier this year, Nichole's public records requests revealed that deaths at the jail plummeted in 2024, and its probation lifted by a national accrediting agency. Journalism doesn't just change policy — it can save lives. Last month, Nate and Publisher & CEO Deirdre Conner had the opportunity to be at the Knight Media Forum, where Deirdre presented on a panel of Press Forward grantees. The CEO of the Knight Foundation, Maribel Pérez Wadsworth opened the event by telling attendees: “The power to create change is not lost — it’s local. It lives in every single one of us.” The Tributary wouldn't be here today without the legions of supporters who believe in this power. Thank you! There's so much more on the horizon, so make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter at https://lght.ly/eh21157 to be the first to know when a new investigation drops.

We were so thrilled by the extraordinary proposals—more than 900—that we doubled our initial plan and are supporting twice as many local newsrooms as expected.
