Protecting and enhancing the urban forest - working in collaboration for better places.
关于我们
The Trees and Design Action Group (TDAG), brings together individuals, professionals, academics and organisations from wide ranging disciplines in both the public and private sectors to improve knowledge and good practice to support the role of urban trees through better collaboration in the planning, design, construction and management and maintenance of our urban places. We produce good practice guidance (free to dowload from our website) and online seminars which are free to attend. All events details and recordings of past events are on our website.

A busy few days at #FutureBuild2025 Many thanks to all those that took a turn on the TDAG stand to talk to others. Our stand was continually buzzing with 'tree talk' and many people left clutching our handy First Steps guides in hand or ready to go visit the TDAG website to download the longer Tree Species Selection Guide and Trees, planning and Development - a guide to delivery. Special thanks must go to Sue James for making it all happen! and of course Stephen Parker who was there all 3 days and helped get the stand looking treemendous. https://lnkd.in/eNtNmyCW

Had a fantastic afternoon presenting at the Futurebuild Placemaking Stage alongside Cristina Refolo and Dr. Gemma Jerome FLI - great discussions on the role of green infrastructure in shaping better places! A huge thank you to Sintali for the opportunity It was also inspiring to hear insightful presentations from TDAG - The Trees and Design Action Group Trust the Landscape Institute all reinforcing the critical importance of integrating green infrastructure into our urban environments. Exciting to see so much momentum behind these vital conversations! #landscapesarchitecture #futurebuild #greeninfrastructure #placemaking

Had a great adventure to the capital today to to give a presentation on 'why we need an increase in urban tree canopy cover and to help on the TDAG - The Trees and Design Action Group Trust stand at FutureBuild. Met loads of "tree-famous" people and lots of great conversations. Ridiculously proud of my name badge but I did manage to let it go in the end! #carmineproject https://lnkd.in/eKJSEmuw

Are you keeping up with all of the consultation on various areas of planning and environmental protection reform? There is a lot of hustle in the #planning, natural environment and built environment sphere, with ?? Planning Reform Working Paper: Development and Nature Recovery, ??Planning Reform Working Paper: Streamlining Infrastructure Planning ?? Land Use Consultation - Defra - Citizen Space, …are more to come? ? My particular concern (of course) is trees and the expertise that arboriculturists provide to ensure that new developments secure high quality, equitable and high performing (i.e. large and healthy trees) tree-scapes. This cannot only be achieved at a spatial, strategic level, but must by its nature include granular, on-the-ground, assessment and provision of expert arboricultural advice in the context of the design and construction details of the proposed development. ? Research shows that large trees provide exponentially more climate change mitigation, ecosystem, human health and place-making benefits than smaller and young trees. Typically it takes at least 30 – 40 years for a newly planted tree to begin to deliver the benefits of large trees, so it is essential that developments seek to retain large mature trees. It is heartening to see engagement with these consultations cross-sector and from organisations including Arboricultural Association, ANCIENT TREE FORUM, Institute of Chartered Foresters, Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), Landscape Institute, Sustainable Soils Alliance, TDAG - The Trees and Design Action Group Trust, British Ecological Society, Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Society for the Environment (SocEnv) I have been in conversation with people from many of these organisations to understand how they are responding. Sue James of #TDAG said: “Given the understanding of the importance of access to nature for people, all new housing should include a requirement to provide trees (both retention and new planting) and greenspace. With investment in design and sound arboricultural advice, retention of large trees can be achieved and density requirements don’t have to be a barrier. There is a TDAG stand at Futurebuild (C64) and a seminar on 5th March at 14.30 on “Healthy Trees, Healthy Places, Healthy People – why we need more canopy cover, tree equity and planting success” The Edge has been engaging with Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government - Legacy and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on Land Use Consultation (more on comments below)“ How do you think planning reform can be achieved while maintaining and promoting a healthy and equitable natural environment? So what is in our new textbook on urban nature and nature-based solutions? Chapter 2 outlines the different conceptual frameworks that can be used to better understand the evolving role nature has played in cities ... It distinguishes between socio-ecological systems and urban political ecology, each of which influence how nature has been regarded and treated in different time periods and urban settings. It seeks to provide an overview of these concepts and explain their implications for how urban nature and nature-based solutions are constructed and viewed today as an urban policy issue. The chapter presents different approaches to understanding urban nature, nature-based solutions, and the relationship between nature and cities. It also discusses the emergence of urban nature and nature-based solutions as a response to urban sustainability challenges. The chapter engages with two case studies to illustrate its key messages: Urban Forest Strategy in Melbourne, Australia, and the Eco-Valley of Tianjin Eco-City in Tianjin, China.
