This client called us in to help with succession planning... He was planning to leave anywhere from 2 - 5 years hence... We asked him who he had in mind to succeed him... He indicated a loyal employee who had been with him for over 20 years... Great! And who will succeed that person in the role he is currently in (running a division with about 15 direct reports)? ???? ???? ?? ????????'?? ?????????????? ?????????? ????????.... That's OK, we'll come back to that... So, tell me what you've done to prepare him to take over. ???????? ???? ?????? ????????? You know... does he make joint decisions with you now? Run the management meetings? Do you have monthly or quarterly reviews of company finances? ????, ???????? ???? ????????. I don't mean to sound sarcastic here... but does he KNOW you picked him to be CEO? Have the two of you had a conversation about this? ??????! And how does he feel about taking over the reins? ?? ??????'?? ????????. What do you mean? ????????, ???? ???????????? ?????????? ???? ?? ???????? ???? ???? ??????. ???? ????????'?? ???????? ???? ??????????. Does he know the timeline? ??????. ?????? ???? ???????? ??????????. Is he prepared to take over today - if, say, you were hit by a bus? ????, ???????????????????? ??????. So how will you get him prepared? ????????'?? ?????? ??????'???? ????????. OK, fair enough. Well a two-year plan is pretty aggressive, but we could meet that timetable if we take him off his regular duties right now and start getting him prepared to take over oh-so-many responsibilities. Who can we move into his role, say, in the next 2 months? ????. ????????????. ???????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ????????. ????! ?????? ???? ???????????????? ?????? ?????? ??????????. ???? ???????? ?????? ?????????????????? ??????. So we have to replace two of him? ????????, ?? ?????????? ?????? ?????????? ???????? ???? ???? ???????? ??????. = = = = Is anyone weeping with me yet? This convo is not made up; I swear. In fact, it got worse (no money to hire an outside CMO, the CEO did quite a lot of billable hours...). ???? ?????? ?????? ?? ?????? ???? ???????????????? ?????????? - just because things are swimming along nicely with you at the helm, doesn't mean that will be true when you step out.
