Celebrating Black History Month: Honoring NJ Leaders in Education
As we celebrate Black History Month, it's a perfect time to highlight the incredible individuals shaping our world—especially those in education who are paving the way for future generations.
One such leader is?Heather Ngoma, the Founding Director of the Alternate Route Teacher Training Program at Rutgers University. With over 25 years of experience, Heather is dedicated to addressing New Jersey's teacher shortage and making a lasting impact on the state's education system.
Through her work, she has partnered with the Teacher Apprenticeship Network (TAN) to create?ParaPreppED, a unique initiative that supports paraprofessionals and substitute teachers in earning their certifications while working in the classroom. This collaborative effort was recently recognized with a $400,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Education to continue building a diverse, qualified teacher workforce.
Heather’s commitment mirrors TAN's mission to provide practical pathways into the teaching profession and remove barriers to success. Her work, alongside TAN, is helping to create opportunities for aspiring teachers, all while fostering a supportive and accessible environment for professional growth.
