It's #TrusteeWeek so wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to our amazing Trustees at the Talking Taboos Foundation. We are so lucky this year to have welcomed Louise McLaren, Shivani Gangrade and Katie Mallion to our board to join Hannah Marcus and Giles Gibbons. The integrity, generosity and thoughtfulness of all our trustees helps our charity be the best it can be. I love our board meetings and every contribution that our trustees make to Talking Taboos. Thank you to our trustees and all the trustees out there running charities - it's not always easy but it's hugely valuable!

The difference between sexuality and sexual orientation & why it matters: These terms are often used interchangeably, but there’s an important distinction between them – and understanding this difference can help address the hypersexualisation that LGBTQIA+ people often face. Sexuality is a broad term that includes a person’s sexual feelings, desires, behaviours, and preferences. It describes how someone expresses their sexual identity – who they’re attracted to, how they experience attraction, and the ways they define their sexual expression. Sexual orientation, on the other hand, specifically refers to who someone is attracted to, focusing on attraction itself rather than behaviour. For example, a bisexual person may be attracted to more than one gender without necessarily engaging in relationships with each. So, knowing someone’s sexual orientation doesn’t give a complete picture of how they express their sexuality. In essence, sexual orientation tells us who someone is attracted to, while sexuality reflects how they experience and express these feelings. Both can change over time and are unique to each person. Recognising this difference is particularly important for LGBTQIA+ people. When sexuality and sexual orientation are conflated, LGBTQIA+ identities can be reduced to sexual acts, feeding into the hypersexualisation and unfair scrutiny the community often faces. While this conflation isn’t unique to LGBTQIA+ people, it’s worth noting that, due to the normative, dominant status of being cisgender + straight, the impact does differ. This isn’t to say that others don’t experience hypersexualisation, but that LGBTQIA+ people do face additional layers of scrutiny in this specific way. Understanding the difference between sexuality and sexual orientation helps foster more respectful and accurate conversations that don’t reinforce harmful stereotypes. #linkedinlearning #inclusion #lgbtqia #lgbtq #sexualorientation

What a fantastic and frank conversation we had at the Talking Taboos Foundation’s Shameful Sex event last night. Three things really stood out to me about the power that taboos hold over us: shame, stereotypes and assumptions. Shame - taboos created a culture of judgement and shame, which we can often internalise and harm ourselves and others with. We need to fight this by removing the silence that taboos hold over us. Stereotypes - taboos often come with stereotypes of who is affected or how people do or ought to behave or feel, often these stereotypes are inaccurate and create false beliefs that hold us back. Assumptions - in the space of silence that taboos create our minds fill in the blanks with the stereotypes and other negative assumptions that again are not accurate and negatively affect us. Our assumptions might hold us back from experiencing pleasure or push us into painful situations because we assume it’s what’s expeted. We break the power of taboos by opening conversations, getting comfortable being a bit uncomfortable and being honest and a bit vulnerable. We need to show up and support our friends and colleagues in these conversations- removing judgement, and listening and learning empathetically. About the event… The event started with a panel conversation- introduced by Florence Nolan who talked about our charity’s mission and why these events are so important, then Hannah Marcus chaired a brilliant panel with Robbie Taylor Hunt, Benjy Kusi, Assoc CIPD?????, Simphiwe Sesane MSc BSc (Hons) DFSRH FRT and Gaby Hasham. The conversation touched on shame, pleasure and the importance of using the right language, good communication and freeing ourselves from assumptions. The audience then got the chance to break for a bit of a chat and submit their questions… and there were a lot of questions (we’re going to try to figure out a way to answer some that we didn’t get to last night). I love how the conversation and cadence of the panel shifts at that point in our events - to enter topics and spaces that the audience have need for and help shape. Thanks to all our panelist’s for showing up fully and sharing their experience - professional and lived. What next? That’s a wrap on our todays taboos for last year - we’ve covered Unruly Bowels, Shameful Sex, Daily Disgusts and Unmentionable Mental Health. Next years taboos are nearly ready and we’ll be launching very soon so keep an eye out for news on that.

Are we more comfortable discussing our bowels than sex? Last month’s event Unruly Bowels sparked more interaction on Linkedin than our upcoming event Shameful Sex. It appears that challenging taboos around bowels may be viewed as less controversial than addressing those surrounding sex. Shameful Sex: stripping away the stigma is the third event showcasing the research of Today’s taboos, which found that general sex-negativity, stereotypes around being ‘dirty’, and STIs are still considered shameful. At Talking Taboos, we’re all about challenging societal norms. But how far are you willing to go? We dare you to like this post and show your connections, whether it be your employer, colleagues, or friends that you're not afraid to break down taboo around sex. Join us and our amazing panel: Gaby Hasham from Brook, Simphiwe Sesane MSc BSc (Hons) DFSRH FRT, Robbie Taylor Hunt and Benjy Kusi, Assoc CIPD????? at 6.30pm on October 30th. This is not your average event - it's a chance to engage with the things we usually shy away from, all the while in a safe, supported and open space. Co-hosted with Impact Hub London. https://lnkd.in/embqkXYj
