This summer, I was granted the opportunity to become a Summer Bridge Counselor for the S2 Cohort of the The Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program at Stony Brook University. From going to Baltimore to train with the Meyerhoff Scholars Program’s counselors at University of Maryland Baltimore County to waking up at 6 in the morning to TA for Calculus II & III to even taking a tour around the Simons Foundation’s Center for Computational Biology at the Flatiron Institute, I can say that this experience was truly one-of-a-kind; I was given the chance to become a role model, leadership figure, and someone who can enable underrepresented communities in a world where we do not get many opportunities. I want to express my deepest gratitude to Erwin Cabrera, PhD for his wisdom, guidance and advice, Natasha McCombs for her tenacity and impeccable judgment and coordination of programming, Brady Brick M.S. for his caring attitude, honesty and integrity (even from across the country!), Kehinde Cole, Ph.D. for her hard work coordinating behind-the-scenes while still teaching Psychology, Alix Dehayem-Massop for being a grounding figure for the counselors and students, offering a realistic perspective at all times, and Ms. Lubin for not only being present in general, but also being a much-needed parent figure for the students. …And to my dearest S2 Cohort, you have done such an amazing job taking up the space that you deserve! Thank you for being yourselves this summer and not letting anyone change that. Keep climbing your mountains, for you will someday reach the very top.

Last week, we at The Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program had the incredible opportunity to accompany a group of S1s (sophomores) on a visit to Yale University. Our two day visit was filled with insightful conversations with deans, faculty, and current graduate students, all of whom shared invaluable advice and experiences about pursuing advanced degrees. A highlight of our visit was a warm welcome reception hosted by President Maurie McInnis who not only caught up with the scholars but also formally introduced us to the vibrant Yale community. Exploring the pathways toward PhD and MD/PhD programs ignited a passion in our students as they envisioned their futures in academia and medicine. The atmosphere was inspiring, and the support from the Yale community was truly remarkable. A heartfelt thank you to Yale University leadership ( Ksenia Sidorenko, Michelle Nearon, Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, Karina Gonzalez Herrera and Faye Rogers) for your generous hospitality and for fostering an environment that encourages diversity, academic ambition and collaboration.
