On this #WorldObesityDay, at THE STAGE PROJECT, we are raising awareness about the need for systemic changes to support healthier ageing. Obesity and muscle loss (sarcopenic obesity) present significant challenges, but prevention and early intervention can make a real difference. ???Today, we are sharing a special post on why maintaining health across the life course is essential—addressing #obesity, improving nutrition, promoting physical activity, and advocating for policy-driven change. ? Let’s push for systemic changes to support healthier lives at every stage of life. ???Read the full post here: https://lnkd.in/egpJbdjw

EXPLORING HOW TO STAY HEALTHY THROUGH AGEING Ageing with multi-morbidity is likely preventable. STAGE is a European Research and Innovation project studying healthy ageing and multi-morbidity using a life-course approach. It tackles the gaps in knowledge to understand life-long processes and their connections with biological, environmental, social, historical and infrastructural factors. We need to gain a deeper understanding of people’s diverse living environments, social stressors, and the biology of ageing. Our research will use data spanning the entire life-course to enable us to understand ageing patterns. This knowledge will be translated into concrete, effective prevention programmes and solutions for people to age more healthily. STAGE has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement no 101137146. UK participants in Horizon Europe Project STAGE are supported by UKRI grant numbers 10112787 (Beta Technology), 10099041 (University of Bristol) and 10109957 (Imperial College London).

We are excited to share our latest publication on evaluating the health of older adults, featured in ?????? ?????????????? ???? ??????????????????, ???????????? ?????? ??????????! ??? Dr. med. Michaela Rippl and Prof. ?????????????? ???????? from the LMU Klinikum München, along with Dr. ?????????? ????????????, Prof. Annette Peters, and Prof. Barbara Thorand from our institute, conducted a comparative analysis of robustness, resilience, and intrinsic capacity to assess long-term health outcomes in older adults based on the KORA-Age study. The study looked at three concepts: robustness, resilience, and intrinsic capacity, to see which one is most effective in predicting adverse health outcomes in older adults. ?????? ????????????????? ?? ?? ?????????????????????(= absence of frailty) showed the strongest protective associations with most adverse health outcomes, including disability, falls, hospitalization, and all-cause mortality. ?? ???????????????????? (= mental ability to adapt and recover quickly from difficulties) and ?????????????????? ???????????????? (= physical and mental capacities) were particularly effective in predicting disabilities. ?? 23% of participants met the criteria for both Robustness and Intrinsic Capacity, while 22% met those for both Robustness and Resilience, highlighting the interaction between mind and body. This research is the first to compare the three concepts with regard to their associations with adverse health events. Although all concepts showed a protective association with all-cause mortality, Robustness appears to be the most useful individual concept for the risk estimation of future adverse health outcomes if resources are limited. ?? Knowing when to arrive is just as important as knowing when to leave. At THE STAGE PROJECT, we are guided by values such as ethics, inclusion, and respect for people. Today, X no longer aligns with these principles. Regarding this, we have decided to leave this social media channel. But this isn’t goodbye—it’s ‘see you soon!’ To be more precise, see you over on Blue Sky! ?? https://lnkd.in/eu5UPkKc?

We are very happy to have Stuart McLennan and Paola Buedo from the Technical University of Munich in our project team using this embedded #ethics approach ??
The Embedded Ethics and Social Science Approach: In the past years, our team at the TUM Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine together with colleagues at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology, have been developing the Embedded Ethics and Social Science approach. The key element of the approach is having trained empirical ethicists and/or social scientists embedded among the project partner’s research and development processes to conduct empirical and normative analysis of ethical and social issues. This allows interdisciplinary collaboration between ethicists/social scientists and developers to identify and address ethical and social issues via an iterative and continuous process from the outset. Although the focus of early articles focused on AI and health technology development, we are increasingly using the approach in various areas, including public health research projects. We first proposed the approach in 2020 in Nature Machine Intelligence which focused on AI development generally: https://lnkd.in/evtzuT_w In an article in 2022 in BMC Medical Ethics, we outlined the fundamental features of embedded ethics, namely its aims, modes of integration, practices, and requisite expertise and training: https://lnkd.in/eYEyBjBd In late 2024, we published an article in Science and Engineering Ethics which presents a "Toolbox" of several methods that have proven helpful for embedding ethical and social science analysis and inquiry in practice: https://lnkd.in/ecbtd9XG We have established the Munich Embedded Ethics and Social Science Hub (MESH) to promote and develop the Embedded Ethics approach, which I co-direct with Amelia Fiske and is managed by Theresa Willem We would love to hear from people working on similar approaches.

?? World Obesity Day 2025: Changing Systems, Healthier Lives For too long, obesity has been seen as an individual issue—but the reality is, failing systems are driving rising obesity rates worldwide. ?? Health systems that don’t prioritise obesity care ?? Food systems that make unhealthy options the default ??? Living environments that limit access to healthier choices ?? Media narratives that fuel stigma instead of support Obesity is a complex, chronic disease—and a major driver of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Taking action on obesity isn’t just about individuals; it’s about fixing the bigger picture. This World Obesity Day (4 March 2025), we are calling on governments, health professionals, advocates, and the public to transform our systems and build a healthier future for all. It’s time for action. Join the movement. ?? World Obesity Day: www.worldobesityday.org ?? Exactly that ????
"We need to ask critical questions about why older people are seen as a burden and are discriminated against in our society". Heidrun Mollenkopf, President, AGE Platform Europe "we need to change the negative image of ageing to a more equal image...so that no older person is left behind." We need to ground policies and interventions in frameworks that explicitly define and guide age-friendly healthcare, emphasizing adaptability, inclusivity, and responsiveness to older adults' preferences and challenges.?
